I am going to look at package deals inclusive of flights and accomodation, see if they have a good price to them, thought of a coach tour but OH says no, total waste of valuable time he says if we have to stay on a coach, travel through to Italy, quick get off/on/stop and back again but they do what I mean 1 day Venice,1 day Pisa 1 day Rome that type of itinery, OH says no fly there def fly there and work out our own itinery
You can do a coach tour where you fly out from Gatwick and back and just do the tour itself by coach.
Something like this .... http://www.cosmostoursandcruises.co.uk/holiday/rome-vesuvius-capri-and-sorrentoI Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Yes, the second is more like a B&B but with suites, breakfast was great. Very handy location too.
If we are staying longer than a few nights we usually stay in Dorsoduro preferably in an apartment.
I cannot see me getting away anytime soon, but cousin has beautiful apartment in an amazing palazzo. I dream of taking somewhere on one of the small islands one day.

Thank you so very much for all the links, time and trouble to reply on this thread, very much appreciated:D
Thank you for the links to the coach trips, unfortunately will not be taken them up at nearly £1,000 each person -£2,000 for us two is too much and would not spend that myself if I did it with my own itinery?
LOSTIN my dates are sat May 3 for a week, comes up as 1670 euros for the week with your link.
Travel republic had flights and 8 nights in Rome for £783 that is more like it:D:D:D Groupon always do 2 or 3 nights in Rome for a few hundred ££, or Venice.
I did see your link poet thank you.
I was thinking (madness maybe) £1,000 for the 2 of us for the week but has to at least include breakfast, can't see Venice providing half board for that;)
Obviously spending money seperate...0 -
The coach links were to give you an idea of what is do-able in a week distance and timewise . Really for ideas not to pay that much.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

I lived in Rome for many years as a kid and would say that a week there would be barely scratching the surface. Venice is definitely worth a visit although I couldn't recommend any hotels as my last visit I sailed in and stayed on the yacht. My technique is to mooch and not book any museums, but play it by ear and explore the local area. Some of the other towns of the lower Po valley are also worth a look without too much travelling involved: just think of your Shakespeare, Mantova, Padova, Ravenna and so forth.
I've recently returned from living in Italy and it's embarassing to admit how little of it I visited, but the places will still be there when I go back and maybe when I won't be so dependent on the Italian economy for luxuries such as travel and holidays!
Florence is another obvious honey-pot, but I think the little hill towns of Tuscany are glorious. My interests include wine so Torino and Piemonte also appeal. Whatever you decide, don't spend too long on travelling as although I like looking out the window on train journeys some of the distances are quite large.0
