And lets face it, rushing around just isn't the Italian way :rotfl:Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

Only when it comes to getting to a restaurant or home for lunch!!!As Manuel says in Fawlty Towers: " I Know Nothing"0 -
I've been thinking about your plan since browsing the thread last night. I hope you don't mind me giving my 2pennyworth.
Why exactly do you want to do this whistle-stop tour of Italy in just one week? I understand you only have one week of work at the moment but what about in years to come.
You could end up like those Japanese tourists that just rush up to sights, photograph them and then rush away. What about time to stand and stare, to enjoy meals, to soak up the culture?
I've had a number of holidays in Italy. A couple of relaxing/sunshine ones where we rented houses (but have visited Cinque Terra and that area) but all the others have been week long city breaks. We've based ourselves in one city and then used public transport to visit surrounding area. So far we've done:- Rome
- Florence (with Pisa, San Gimignano)
- Verona (with day trip to Venice, Vicenze and Lake Garda)
- Sorrento (with Pompeii and Capri)
I agree:D what it is is me, I was close to going to Venice a while back and in the end (cost and timings) we did not go and feel the pain and now its almost certain this time we are finally getting to go to Italy have got over carried away with the whole Itinery/planning/must see as much as we can in 1 week:rotfl::rotfl:
I have saved, saved, saved, xmas is very thin this year, every penny counts;) it's all eyes on next May, 1 week in Italy and keep thinking want to go there and make sure we get to see as much as possible:D0 -
Oh sweetie, if you've put so much effort into having this trip, don't sell yourself short by doing a whirlwind tour and not really experiencing anywhere properly, chose a couple of places and really soak them up.
I wasn't joking when I said rushing isn't the Italian way, it really isn't, once you get there you'll know what I mean, but trying to run when everyone else is meandering is hard work, better to go with the flow and enjoy the experience.
Italy isn't going anywhere, you'll just have even more incentive to get back there. There are always cheap flights available to somewhere in Italy, some creative household accounting will get you back in no time.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
Victory, I went to Venice multiple weekends over a year and still saw more each visit. (I much prefer the little islands and the back calls, these take time to explore, and to get to) .
. My husband is from Florence, and the first time we ran through there in a day to do some emergency family stuff, it was awful I felt so cheated.
If you want to pack in more than one thing, why not pick two favourite places and then you can go on a day trip from each place so you see up to four places if you want to but see two places a bit better if your prefer.0 -
Yes thank you you are both right:D I am going for Venice and Rome would that work?
My OH has been to Venice and he says that he managed it all in a day and was not particularly fussed whether he returns or not and does not want to stay there for the full week so have to take that into consideration:D
Venice accomodation seems very expensive though and we don't want to spend vast amounts when we will be out exploring, Venice to Rome is 5 1/2 hours on the train and 110 euros which is more expense maybe even have to drop Rome?
So far the flights are cheap enough, it is where to land and where to go when we get there that is causing the head-ache;)
OH has decided the best thing to do is to leave it to me0 -

Not sure how he managed to see Venice in a day ? , weve been twice and not seen anything really .......... ok thats maybe because we spend far to long in pavement cafes !
Not sure where you are with your plans now , but echo what others have said , dont rush Italy
Now you havent even mentioned Lake GardaVuja De - the feeling you'll be here later0 -

Victory there are cheaper, basic places in Venice, or you can stay in mestre if you really want to save money and train in.....but seriously...stay in Venice, really, its the evening wanders that make it.
You cannot see it in a day. You cannot, go off and see the little islands? Wander the little streets? Nope, not possible. You can walk the tourist route in a day, yes. But 'see it' ? Nope.0 -
Phew I've just red the thread through and I'm exhausted. I'm known for throwing multiple cities into a short trip but this was too nuts even for me so I'm glad you've had a re-think Victory
Are you using Skyscanner to get the open jaw flights you need ? That's where I'd look (and kayak -is good both for the flights and also the hotels)
Don't discount packages (Thomson etc)now you've settled on a two centre as every once in a while they work out the best deal.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
MSE Florida wedding .....no problem0 -
You can't see all of Venice in a week never mind a day. It is a magical place for just wandering. I agree you can stay in Mestre, but really to get the flavour of it you are best in Venice proper imo.0
