Rome is in the centre (ish) of Italy, Genoa and Venice are north albeit on different sides. So I would fly into Rome, then go north to either Genoa or Venice and fly home from one of them. Venice is served by two airports ( as is Rome) so check out both for the cheapest flights.
It will be a rush though, but Pisa is just the tower not much else so if you have to leave something out that would be it for me.
I can give you ideas for hotels in Rome and Venice, and Genoa at a push.0 -

That is exactly is what my OH has just said to me- leave Pisa out it is just a leaning tower and not much else:D
Flying into Genoa is working out a lot cheaper than Venice/Rome flights so will stick to Genoa airport, then Portofino, leave out Pisa, go from Portofino to Rome, 2 days there and over to Venice and fly back there but yet to see if the flights divided like that work out much more expensive, the train to Venice from Rome is over 70 euros each (getting the fast one) so that is an added expense and the train from Portofino to Rome yet to find out the actual cost, much more googling to do on this one:D0 -
Have you looked at Genoa - Venice- then Rome? You are backtracking going to Rome from Genoa then to Venice.
I would book flights as soon as you have definite dates, they never come down.
Look at the map.0 -
TBH, I don't think 2 days is enough for Rome, there's far too much to see there, it's a trip on it's own. I would save it for another timeAccept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

I never realised I was backtracking from Genoa-Rome-Venice, you are right, then again I could go to Venice airport and go out to Genoa and down to Rome or Rome up to Genoa and across to Venice?0 -

We go to Rome quite a lot as my OH often works there.
It can be done in 2 days if you plan ahead; book a tour of the Vatican (Angel Tours would be my preference) stay close to Piazza Navona, so that you can see all the sites in that area; Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, etc. Three days would be better but if you plan it it is doable.0 -

Thats the thing, I'm not sure when the next time will be so over planned? Like OH says you would not expect for eg to go to Scotland -Kent and then through to Norfolk in a day or two would you?
No, he is right, I know there is 7 days, I just really want to make the most of each and every one of them, got a flight in for lunch time landing (making the most of that day) and had a flight out back home very late in the night to make the most of an entire last day, not really adding in properly the train costs, the hours on the train to get from A to B, etc
I see often on Groupon Rome 3 nights or Milan 2 nights or Venice 3 nights just not 2 here and 3 there and 2 there in all one week:D
Once you are there cram it all in....;)0 -

38 euros for 1 adult? colossum is a must? looking into places close to Navona...0 -
I don't want to rain on your parade but the last few times we have flown into Italy we have been delayed.....for up to five hours, which meant that we should have arrived in Venice at 9pm and it was 2am when we got there, scuppering plans for that night and meaning we were knackered the day after.
Trains in Italy are fine but the fast ones are dearer, but they are what you will need to make the most of the time. Is Rome non negotiable? Florence is nearer but tbh I do prefer Rome over Florence but not everyone does!! And Florence is stunning.0 -
Have you checked out the prices and timings on trenitalia.com? It's winter timetables at the moment, but the pricing and times won't be that much different in May, it will give you a realistic idea of what is doable.
There's a button at the top right to translate to English if your Italian is all that but you have to put the towns in in Italian.
