That is a really good point, if you are caught up in one of these your schedule is in trouble!!
Yes the schedule is too tight:eek: some people say extend it for 2 weeks but that can't be work wise, so one week and stay in one area people say like fly to Rome and go from there so looked on travel republic and 1 week in Rome not even breakfast over £1,000 , so add on food drink and entrances prices tidy wack comes to mind.
I googled some of the venice hotels thanks poet no availability this has actually turned into a nightmare:cool:
I really think I would not feel happy just staying in one place , sort of I have wasted an oportunity, just have to make the itinery more realistic0 -
Oh the accommodation would be more b&b , not too bothered about plushness, would like them close to the attractions, say eg venice Central not 6 miles out and having to get buses in all the time, same with Rome etc, the closer it is the less time wasted back and forth:D0

It's only worth a couple of hours to take the photographs and enjoy a rip off drink.
If you must stay overnight, look at hotels in neighbouring Santa Margherita Ligure, which is where the train station is. Ten minute bus ride into Portofino.
For myself, I wouldn't want less than three days in Rome or Venice - there's too much to see and do.
(On the other hand, more than this and you get monument fatigue, and need a day off)
Agree on Pisa - OK, but not worth it costing a day, and extra train fares.
I'd combine this with a Tuscany episode - Florence, Pisa, Lucca, San Gimignano, Volterra.
This is what people are saying to me yes. Portofino is very expensive, found that out googling and the hotels are far too expensive for my pocket.
Rome yes people keep telling me 1 day is no good and there is a lot of walking involved.
OH really doesn't want to stop at Pisa for the cost and stopping for a leaning tower:D0 -
I doubt there is no accom, more likely it is not yet up online. It is true some hotels in Venice and Rome get booked way ahead but those mentioned should have rooms for next May. I would use the email facility on the website rather than the online booking engines.0

Ah ok, they come up when I put my dates is ' sorry your dates have no availability etc etc ' if you would like to search for different dates, so I left it0 -
If they're small Italian B&B's it's more likely they haven't started next seasons bookings yet.
IMO, Portofino just isn't worth it, it's overrated, overpriced and not the 'real' Italy. There are so many other places that are more worthy of your precious time.
Genova is a bit of a dive, so you wouldn't want to spend time there anyway, seems a bit of a waste going to far west when the rest of the places you want to go are in the opposite direction. Although it is cheap to fly there :rotfl:
If you can get a flight into Pisa at a reasonable price the town is very close to the airport, 5 min train ride, and the tower is within walking distance of the station, the town is pleasant enough too.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
If you want to search for hotels in Italy, then it may be a idea to use this site. You can then check if you do not want to book through them if the hotel has its own direct site. I have only put in for Venice, but you can change to Rome.
If you go to Venice, try to eat out in the smaller restaurants, in the little back streets, away from St Marks Square, Grand Canal etc. Even what you could call Wine bars in those areas, do quite affordable and good meals. Harry's Bar for maybe one drink, but is quite pricey.

We drove to Italy last year, and even if we had flown, I doubt that we would attempt so much as the OP in such a short space of time.
I would rely on planes and trains, and leave out Rome.
Plane to Genoa, spend one night there, then spend three nights in Florence, where you could take the train to Pisa one morning, and then go from Pisa to Siena and back to Florence, which would leave a couple of days to see Florence - which is beautiful. You could then have three nights in Venice, which is plenty.
Next time you go to Italy, you could do Rome and Naples.0 -
I've been thinking about your plan since browsing the thread last night. I hope you don't mind me giving my 2pennyworth.
Why exactly do you want to do this whistle-stop tour of Italy in just one week? I understand you only have one week of work at the moment but what about in years to come.
You could end up like those Japanese tourists that just rush up to sights, photograph them and then rush away. What about time to stand and stare, to enjoy meals, to soak up the culture?
I've had a number of holidays in Italy. A couple of relaxing/sunshine ones where we rented houses (but have visited Cinque Terra and that area) but all the others have been week long city breaks. We've based ourselves in one city and then used public transport to visit surrounding area. So far we've done:- Rome
- Florence (with Pisa, San Gimignano)
- Verona (with day trip to Venice, Vicenze and Lake Garda)
- Sorrento (with Pompeii and Capri)

I do agree maman. It is like going to see Angkor Wat, Cambodia in one day. You never get to see all the other hidden beauty of the area, and there is much more to see, if you like that sort of thing. It is much better to savour the time in a destination, than to get back home and think I wish that I had more time to see something that I missed when you look back after.
Verona is a lovely city, as is Soave nearby (plus great wines) and very easy to take day trips into Venice.
Assisi is also a very scenic place to visit, as are many other towns and cities in Italy.
Living here, I suppose that I just take a lot for granted, but still like to get to see new places when I am out looking at heating projects. Always something new around the corner!!As Manuel says in Fawlty Towers: " I Know Nothing"0
