Hmmm - I'm fairly relaxed about preps, we're well stocked up, have candles, alternative means of cooking etc. at home, BUT I'm supposed to be elsewhere on Sunday, for a workshop, 40 miles away in a village on the coastal side of the West Dorset hills. Last winter I nearly broke an axle getting back from there; half the roadway had washed away in the two hours I was down there, so I drove into what looked like a puddle (single track road, very steep) & heard an awful crunch... luckily no real harm done, apart from getting damp & cold trying to see under the car with a torch in the cold & wet, with torrents of icy water racing down the road like a mountain stream, but it gave me quite a scare. That village is quite often cut off altogether in winter.

So do I grit my teeth, remember I'm British & just get on with it & go anyway? Or do I let everyone else down & cry off? OH was until recently a member of the emergency services & is very scathing about idiots who drive unnecessarily in bad weather, as it's not just their lives they're risking, but also those of the ambulance crews & fire engines who have to turn out to rescue them. But I don't want to let the others down...

I am supposed to be going to work on Monday but I really don't want to if this lives up to it's expectation :( It isn't far but unnecessary risks are stupid - wish the boss saw it that way.

Kittie- Does your job have something to do with the weather? MetOffice?
Thanks for the warnings :) Am starting to think i am going to park the car away from the trees. Easier said than done though, we are surrounded by trees!

no. I am just lucky enough to afford a sub to the best astrophysicist/ weather forecaster on this planet. He has been incredibly correct all the time I have subscribed and says that the earth is cooling, hence the very wild jetstream swings which are causing the wild shifts in air flow. We have just had a very major X flare which is affecting space weather and us

I am also a physicist, although now retired

Make sure the electricity company know about this, they'll treat that house as a priority and be able to offer more advice/assistance than usual.

:) We are on the priority list. Last power cut was just about an hour but we couldn't get any information from the electricity company at all - no returned telephone calls. I know that they have a lot of people ringing at times like that but we just wanted to know if it was time to move to the hospital.

I am a panicky type though!

See who your DNO are and if they're on twitter, they can be quite responsive on there as it's quick to respond and a lot of people can see the information they're giving out. UKPN in the East, South & London are really good at Twitter responses! Obviously they might not be as good usual in major outages, but still good to try cover all bases when trying to get a response

This from the chief forecaster at the Met office today (in the Independent)

Eddy Carroll, chief forecaster at the Met Office, added: "This storm doesn't exist at the moment, but our forecasts models predict it is likely to develop in the west Atlantic on Saturday."

Seriously? Doesn't exist? Perhaps he should look at the satellite images on his own website. It's absolutely massive and twirling like a top.

  • Have just looked up the Beaufort scale and Hurricane Force 12 is 74 mph so in keeping with the 80mph winds forecast over the last few days, hope that helps and although it's bad enough it's not as bad as it sounds, Lyn xxx.
