Eating out of the freezer and cupboards challenge - part two

  • I’m trying to save money this month and this seems a good place to start. Dieting as well which makes it a little extra challenging! Regardless, I’m trying to do as little food shopping as possible this month, whilst using up food from the cupboards, freezer etc.
This evening I made some baked oats for breakfast over the next few days, and added to it some mincemeat that was in the cupboard. It was actually dated best before 11/2018, but since it was unopened and looked/ smelled ok when I opened it, I assumed it would be fine. I can’t see there is anything in it that would go off?! !♀️

My friend asked me if I had any pineapple slices, I had so while I was waiting to give them to her glanced at the date Feb 2011, explained this to her, we examined the tin, no rust marks not blown, she said she would open and check, apparently it was delicious, and it was Wednesday I think and she is still alive.
Do I need it or just want it.

You're not the only one trying to save this month, or in my case it should say 'this year'

  • I have just discovered this post. My daughter thinks I am one of a few to have a jampacked freezer filled wih all kinds of bargains which they will actually end up throwing out, but now I happily realise there are many of us!
This year I have decided to eat what I have and buy what I eat.
I am retiring later in the year so will need to be much more careful what I buy. I live in a little village without shops and no transport so will need to have a bit of stock, but not to the extent I have now.
I had everything out yesterday, threw a few bits away, half a bag of Aunt Bessie's Roasties, bb March 2018, some seriously frostbitten peas and a few bits of bread, so not too bad. Cooked the leg of lamb that was fresh, reduced from Waitrose on 10.2.2018, not too bad, spiced up, with some of the slightly younger Aunt Bessie's Roasties and some chopped spinach that was just in date.
Thanks for all your contributions and suggestions!

I like you have food that is ood in the freezer. My breadcrumbs that I used the other day had been in there since Sep 18, still used them and they were okay. I’m a bit naughty and don’t stick with the dates of use on freezer items.

Need to get myself organised and do a freezer inventory so I know what I have and dates when frozen/suggested use by dates.

Welcome Brizesaver Jampacked freezers and cupboards is what this thread is about. I've come to the conclusion after many years, that it must be a yet to be recognised disease that we suffer/enjoy.:rotfl:

    Yesterday
In: 3 x rolls of biscuits.
I found a simple recipe for biscuits where you can freeze the dough before cooking. Made a batch that said 45 biscuits, divided the mixture into 4, rolled each one into a sausage shape for slicing later, and froze three. Cooked the other one at lunchtime - very acceptable and made 10 biscuits just enough to share with DH
    Out: cooked turkey,

Out: not sure yet, need to use a few things up from the fridge
