I've just caught up on this thread after being away from a computer yesterday. What a difference a day makes!

I wanted to comment to add that Alex and Mrs K's relationship is a whole lot more complex than is coming across in this thread. She's been overspending just as much as he has (although in her defense she didn't realise they were in debt), and unfortunately seems to now be undermining Alex's attempts to pay off his debt. He's pulled together a nice pot of money to do F&F offers with by selling his possessions... and she wants to use the pot to buy a £3k car! Her family have been just as rude to Alex as Alex's family have been to her, and her father has threatened to punch Alex's father in the past. All in all, I think it would be fair to say that she's a spirited woman who is unlikely to let her views be ignored ;)

I do agree with those posters who have said that this is a decision that needs to be made by (and for) Alex, Mrs K and Little K... and not Alex's parents. Alex, you need to do what's right for your son, in consultation with your wife. What your parents want really does need to come second.
    Mortgage when started: £330,995

His story/background changes with the wind but mainly because the more people ask questions the bigger the story becomes and more unbelievable :D

Thank you for all sensible responses.

As this has now gone way off topic, I would appreciate it if no more replies were made.

Yeah, but it is though, isn't it? Morally, if not legally.

Do you feel the same way about ISAs?

Most of us don't always agree with our spouses and often have differing opinions on what life changing decisions to make. Yet most of us value our spouse's opinion as much as our own and greatly respect their point of view. This means we then work together, either to agree which action to take or find a middle ground.

I couldn't agree more. I've printed this out to take home to show my OH as it is something I've been struggling to make him understand and you have summed it up perfectly.
Worrying won't stop bad stuff from happening, it just stops you from enjoying the good.

FC, you talk about Alex's parents ego, but Alex himself has admitted at times his ego is the real centre of this. That he cannot see why people then worry for his wife's emotions or opinion in this or his son's Concerns me for them but for him too.

    Very succinctly put.

I can see my parents still being alive in seven years time, if that helps. :)

You mentioned age 71 - well, they can easily live another 7 years from that, or longer.

Or people can die at a much younger age. Like my younger daughter, who didn't see her 40th birthday. Or my first husband, who didn't see his 60th. Life is uncertain. However, having lived past 70 and - one assumes - in reasonable health, it's quite possible for your parents to live a lot longer.
