How to fall in love with saving money

JIL, bonjour, merci et welcome. If your son is moving to Paris that is definitely a good excuse for lots of visits.

Welcome home, hope you had a lovely break and are suitably refreshed.
Thank you for your welcome, and my son will be living there from the end of June/mid July.
I am looking forward to midnight, is that sad? Mine and OHs pay goes into the bank just after midnight and I will move some of it over to our savings.
I am trying to overpay the mortgage, but at the same time put some money away. I would really like to be in a position as to when the mortgage is paid off I have a big lump sum. Then me and the OH can sell this house and hopefully not need a mortgage to move into a new property.0 -
hi JIL, thanks, have had a wonderful break
Re looking forward to midnight, no it's not at all sad!! I hang out for payday now so I can shift money to savings
The plan to pay off the mortgage/save a lump sum sounds like a good one - how many more years do you think it will take before you are mortgage-free? ...
Looking forward to regular travelogues from Paris after your son starts working there

hi YoungBusinessman, yes very good trip thanks, but it is nice to be home on my own sofa, I have a roaring fire going and it's very cosy:) But I had a great time in Paris, have brought home a tarte citron to eat tomorrow so not quite at the end of the fun just yet. It's so easy to get there by Eurostar I will probably go back before the end of the year, probably next autumn, when the prices get cheaper again.0

Big grimey London to me is a holiday with 100+ quid hotels, and a RT flight (not train lol).
Been saving my hotel points, takes me forever to get enough for a few days in central london lolo0 -
Yes it's certainly not cheap to visit, atush - but those sound like pretty nice hotels? ... And London is so worth visiting - well I think so. Every time I go away somewhere I think I really ought to be more of a "tourist" in London - I've lived here 15 years this year and pretty much take it for granted, but there is so much interesting stuff here, every bit as much as there is in Paris - great museums and galleries etc. So, that's one good thing about going away - it reminds you that you shouldn't neglect the good things where you live.

It is usually between midnight and 1am. I think it goes in by Bacs on the monthly pay run. All I will do is move some from my current account to our savings account but it just gives me a little lift as I transfer it.
You are not the only one dying for a lie in. The OH struggles to sleep in at the weekend, so I will write him a shopping list and send him to the shops.0 -
I am trying to overpay the mortgage by roughly the same amount as we save. I am aiming for no more than five years. If mortgage rates do go up though I may have to rethink. Also if a house caught our eye in the meantime that may also throw a spanner in the works. I will also have to factor in some Eurostar train fares as well as a couple of cheap holidays.hi JIL, thanks, have had a wonderful break

Sounds like a really good plan.
People do say it feels like an achievement to have paid off the mortgage. I'm currently locked in to a cheap fixed rate and can only repay a certain amount (10%) without penalty but should start thinking about whether it might be wise to use some of the savings I will (hopefully) build up over the next few years to pay off a big chunk of the mortgage. 0 -
Have switched over my broadband/phone connection as an MSE measure and the new service (TalkTalk) went live today. It was incredibly simple and quick and is working much better than the old connection so very glad I did it. It should save me about £15-20 a month. Yay!
