afternoon,

last nigh my brother in law was saying he is beating the power companies by sticking a big magnet on his meter and making it go backwards.

this sounds very dodgy and dangerous, i have tried to find out who does their electric but he got cagey. how can I inform someone to check him out, obviously dont want to go to the police and dont want them cut off or go to court as they have a 6 month old and not much money.

thank you

Meter can't go backwards using a magnet...

If you want to report then you know which region he's in just report it to the distributor. They'll go to the police if they find evidence of meter tampering so it will end up in court and possible prison time.

Meters are digital now days-the magnet trick doesn't work....... You sound very self righteous - could he possibly be winding you up because he KNEW you'd react ?

Just as a matter of interest ...if you report him -what makes you think he won't get cut off or reported for fraud and the police get involved.
He's an adult -talk to him about any risks you percieve -and let him make his own mind up ........or report him to the authorities if you feel strongly enough to create a family rift.

i did think that and it was a joke, but spoke to my sister and it is 100% true. he bought a super powerful magnet from china and sticks it to one side of the meter and the disk spins backwards.

thats why im asking here, dont want him to get cut off or end up in prison, could not do that.

how risky is it? if it is endangering their lives then i will have no option but to report

It can prevent the dials from advancing and slow the dials down. It is theft and suppliers will cotton on. If you don't know the supplier tell me what area and I will give you the number for their revenue protection unit
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

If the meter runs backwards, then the agent reading will show it up as faulty or tampered with, or if a customer reading, it will be rejected by the system as erroneous.
He'll then (in the latter case) get an estimated bill anyway.
In the former case, he'll get a visit from Revenue Protection.

No the meter won't explode or start emitting killer gamma rays -the risk will be to his pocket, criminal record and freedom.

I'd butt out if I were you.

its is Rochester, will it involve the police? don't want to risk him getting a criminal record.
