Also it might be worth getting you wife to write to Tesco to give you permission to speak to them about any account queries in future.0

That was a typo - account was meant to be computer. This actually highlights how poor your bank's security is - anyone can log in from the other side of the world with just a user id and password (which could of easily have been phished) and transfer a large sum of money.
It's about time that all banks introduced two step verification to protect their customers.0 -

This. Complaints like the OP's are what cause the entire banking industry to drag its feet, Tesco's login system is highly commendable and frankly if people like the OP struggle with it because they don't have any interest in educating themselves on how to use the system (and go to the enormously difficult lengths of having their 2-step verification phone available) they shouldn't be using online banking and making the whole world less secure for the rest of us.0 -
Do Tesco have an automated menu system which tells you the balance over the phone?
this being a money saving site and I get free phone calls at the weekend that is not an option until the weekend.
I must remember to find an alternative to the 0845 number, anyone,
to save me looking on saynoto0845?
Also being hard of hearing I prefer the internet to the telephone.0 -

I have 2 step verification on my bank account, a card reader which I took to Australia with me.
It is this pain in the neck Tesco system that only lets you use a specific computer to access, of all things, a credit card statement. Why not make it easier on yourself in future and just pay off her credit card in full each month by direct debit,0 -

But it doesn't only let the account holder use a specific computer does it - it merely implements extra security if it doesn't recognise the computer. Had your wife been the one accessing the account then she would have been able to verify herself and gain access.
I would say that the security has done the job it was designed for - it has stopped a fraudulent access to the account.0 -

And if you didn't have your card reader with you, what then?
That's the very simple mistake you've made in this case, because you don't have the two-step verification device you/your wife configured, ie her phone.0 -

I'd much rather use phone verification than a card reader.
I have a card reader for my main bank account and it is a pain in the butt having to take the card reader and card to work/on holiday/whereever just in case I need to log in to my internet banking. At least with phone verification I have my phone with me any way, so I don't need to worry about looking after another bit of equipment that serves no other purpose.0 -
Found this.
http://www.tescobank.com/security/help-protect-you.htmlLogging in to Online Banking
When you register for Online Banking or change your password, we ask you if you would like us to recognise your computer. To do this we store a small security token on your computer. It doesn’t hold any private or personal information about you or your account; it simply allows us to recognise your computer when you login to Tesco Bank Online Banking. Recognising your computer is a security measure as it helps us make sure it’s you logging in.
You can ask us to recognise as many computers as you like. Because we use it as a security measure, you shouldn’t ask us to recognise a public computer, for example a computer in an internet caf! or a library.
If we don’t recognise the computer you’re using, we ask you to enter a One Time Access Code, which we’ll send by text message to your mobile. This helps stop fraudsters logging in to your account because they either have to be using a computer you’ve asked us to recognise, or have your mobile phone as well as knowing your Online Banking security details.
We’ll also use a One Time Access Code if you reset your Online Banking Security Number or Password.Still rolling rolling rolling......<

You can use ANY computer/mobile device to log in and check the balance. You just need access to the registered phone so you can get the code that will allow access.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with Tesco's system. You're only annoyed at this system because; a. You're wife is useless with a PC, b. She's on holiday and c. She's switched her mobile phone off.0
