Facing dismissal because of a mistake

    Thank you.

This has been the hardest few days of my life.
I thought I had a job for life, I could sit here all day telling you how much I've done to change that store. I've replaced the entire management team as some of them I caught stealing large sums, poor performance, bulling etc. I've faced up to prolific shop lifters, been to court over them, issued banning orders, worked days off, and so much more. I love my job and I love the store but I do not love the excessive hours or the sharks I work with.

Regardless of anyone opinion, I know I'm good at my job. And I am very honest. That's why I've made myself ill over it all because I know it's an irreversible stupid mistake. I feel like I've let myself down in the worst possible way.

I really am the lowest I've ever been.

All I can say is, speaking as someone who has had a few horrible jobs that made me ill, this may be your lowest point and there may still be tough times ahead of you, but you will get through this

I made up my mind long before I was sacked (and I was sacked for putting in a grievance complaining about my horrible working conditions), that I was out of that job, because I too worked long hours, some of them unpaid, dealt with over and above my job description with little support, thats an understatement. I went in one day, cleared my desk and walked out and I had to endure 6 months of hell before they ended my contract and a year preparing for tribunal, but I could not have worked one more shift in that building. And when I walked, I had no idea what would happen to me work wise, but I was determined, as long as I could pay my bills and eat, I was never setting foot back in that place.

About 12 months later I got an anonymous but supportive letter through the post to tell me they were sorry what had happened to me (I presume it was from an ex work colleague), to tell me that a staff member I had hired just before I went off sick, had dropped dead due to the stress of working for that employer. That could have been me.

And I too was stitched up by an assistant manager who I had promoted to the job during some really awful times in his own life, he was at risk of losing his home before he got the job. He didnt want me out to get my job, he didnt have the qualifications, but he was someone I had worked with in a previous job and believe me, the lies he told about me to other people, it was staggering.

I spent a long time unwell and angry but one day I woke up and thought sod it, Im out of that horrible miserable place. And I had a new job within 6 weeks.

It is awful and its awful when someone you should trust is obviously trying to stick the boot in, no matter what you yourself may have done wrong.

But getting to your GP and not going to the meeting until you have all the paperwork in front of you that you need is a start. The second is, dont starve yourself, making yourself ill will not help.

There is always something better out there, no matter how tough it seems right now. Ive had numerous bad experiences in the workplace and thats why Im self employed now, but the bottom line is, no job is worth your health, your health has to come first.

OP please try and rest your mind, all of this is going to make you very ill. Get yourself mentally strong and update your CV, if the worse comes you'll still have a fight on your hands to get another job.

I always think things happen for a reason and in your case perhaps a better job is on the way for you.
It's better to regret something I did do than to regret something that I didn’t. :EasterBun

Not "sort of", you did give him £30 of petty cash and ask him to post something of yours.

That will most likely be the starting point of the investigation.

From there you will be asked why you went against company policy and why you did not pay back the money.

The assertion being that you stole from the company.

Those would be two strikes against you and those are the accusations that you need to have answers for.

As I said in a previous post stating that the non repayment was an oversight owing to your workload and asking for leniency would be a good way to approach that.

As the person who deals with the petty cash can you come up with a credible answer as to why you used company money for personal use?

Yes because the parcel had been posted! I couldn't undo it because I forgot my purse! As far as I was aware I had money in my purse upstairs! It left me with no choice!

And at that point you write an IOU and get the deputy to sign it putting it in the petty cash tin and you keep the key!

It's from the till we don't have a box. I thought effectively it was an IOU as only me and him were aware. He obv thought this is his chance to stitch me up, and report it.

That is not a credible answer.

You chose to give company money to a member of staff for your personal use.

The fact that you intended to pay it back after the event does not excuse the breach of company policy.

It might not be credible but there is no other answer. I know I was wrong. I can't change it.

    FROM THE TILL?????????

    That's even worse!!!

So you underbank the petty cash use? So no IOU and now he has turned against you. No wonder as you have given him the opportunity to do so.

It wasn't underbanked, all petty cash goes through the till. There is a button on there for petty in and petty out. It's how it's always done.

I'm not denying I'm in the wrong! But as I keep saying, it wasn't malicious, devious or intentional. It was a stupid split second decision that I will regret forever.

I know it's not a lot of help on this occasion, but for anyone new to petty cash, the system we use at work is that if anyone needs cash in advance because we don't know how much it will cost, we write your name and the amount given on a Petty Cash voucher and put it in the tin. When you come back with the change and the receipt, the receipt is stapled to the voucher and the change put back in the tin.

If you fail to come back with the change and receipt, we know who you are ...
