The OP did say 'He had money from petty cash and I said when you get back ill sort out how much mine costs.'

The manager should have said no don't post my items as you can not use the petty cash for that.

He also probably had his own money as well.
We could also read it to say that she didn't say "Use the money from petty cash and I'll put it back in when you get back"

Can I just clarify? He doesn't deny that you said you would pay the money back but denies that you told him you had forgotten your purse?

Another scenario is that he could have paid out of his own money then when you didn't pay him back took (aka stole) the petty cash money to cover himself leaving you to carry the can.

Of course any PO receipt will show what money was spent.
(Apologies if I have missed that, posting on my phone)

It is okay for a manager to say a case of using petty cash for your own personal use could be gross misconduct but he should not pre-judge the outcome of any hearing.

There are a lot of IF'S but as someone who processes petty cash and seen this happen I still say the person in charge is to blame.

Who is in charge of the petty cash? Do we know?
  • This thread had become ridiculous. The poor OP wanted advice on how to best handle the situation honestly, yet others have decided to make it into a fiction contest! I do hope this works out for them, but I am certain that will not happen if she tells a jackanory.

If I'd been in similar situation with asking somebody to post a personal parcel for me, thinking that they would use their own money & they told me not to bother about it when I realised I'd actually brought no money to work with me, my automatic reply would have been along the lines of ' no, why should you pay for my parcel, I insist on repaying you'. Surely to expect a work colleague to have a spare £10 on them is a bit cheeky, especially as you as manager will obviously earn more than he does.

Just tell the truth, none of this trying to drop your colleague into hot water. It's natural for him to want your job, don't most people want to get on in life & climb the career ladder & achieve a higher salary? No point in holding that against him.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Don't hold it against him even if he's trying to climb the ladder by getting her sacked?

Summary. He told her not to bother paying it back, then grassed her up, been lording it around work saying he's the manager, then denied the conversation about the forgotten purse....
but that's perfectly fine and she shouldn't hold it against him? if it was i'd be doing a lot more to him than holding it against him.

Can I ask why you didn't give or offer him money to post your parcel in the first place?

He denies everything, he said he assumed the original £30 was from my own pocket, he knew it wasn't as I told him.

He simply says he came back to store, and then went home. He says he was supposed the next day to see I hadn't paid the £10 into petty cash and left it as an outgoing expense. I.e looked like a company expense.

Because there was a whole load of post to go, I had no idea how much it would cost and I was exceptionally busy so I said I'd sort it all out when he got back.
