Because no-one has ever heard of AutoTrader when it comes to selling cars. You pay for the advert, not an additional percentage of the sale.

and do you complete the sale through auto trader??? no you dont. totally different business model.

try contacting auto trader if you saw an ad on the website, then called the dealer direct, bought the car and then had a problem with it!!

All Autotrader do is allow people to place ads to gain interest, all bargaining and selling is done off site. Ebay is totally different!
  • OK, you're an ebay Champ. I'll grant you that. Clearly you don't feel comfortable trading with real people and feel the need to have some intermediate money grabbing machine to overrule you. I don't think I've ever seen any kind of issues/complaints about ebay and their processes on here before. They are clearly GOD when it comes to buying and selling, and they must be paid richly.

Quite. So where is the competition?
And most of the previous examples are "not". There is no viable alternative to sell a sweaty pair of trainers located on the south coast to someone in Scotland.

then feel free to set one up. Ebid have been trying for years and have failed.

It's still not a monopoly, just because Ebay has a wider audience than the others does not mean it monopolises, it's just bigger and more global.

If you wanted to you could post your ad for free on the selling pages on facebook, most major areas have them, agree bank transfer with a buyer including postage and send them off. Fees cost =0 Hassle and time taken = huge.

Or set up a whole of uk facebook selling page, they may well already exist.

Personally I'd rather pay Ebay their fees and instantly reach a bigger audience with 1 easy ad!

    You'd deal with the dealer.

That's fair enough. If it works for you, then so be it. You could be 10% better off though. Why not put your prices up to compensate? Oh wait ... because then you might encounter some competition :D

I'm no Ebay champ, I often do sell things on gumtree and facebook, i'm perfectly happy to meet people in real life.

Ebay are not god, they do many things that annoy me, but taking the fees that they ask for is not one of them.

You seem to think Ebay should exist as some kind of public service! It's not it's a business. And like any business if they get it wrong too often they will fail. However most transactions happen smoothly and they thrive, this is the world, this is capitalism.

You want to set up a socalist version of ebay where you just cover your cost as a business then please do so, make it as big as ebay and you will have won and ebay will fold. as everyone will be using your new platform.

exactly whereas if you have a problem on Ebay you can ask Ebay to resolve it! So different things.

Well if you'd stop paying the 10% on every transaction lazy tax, if might be easier for competition to emerge.

I'd support other sites if they had the advertising budget for me to actually hear of them.

What do ebay know about a sweaty pair of trainers?

my prices are a fair bit higher than a lot of my competitors, but because I run my business well and do things right I still sell plenty.

You are clearly anti Ebay, thats your right but on this thread you are basically encouraging the habit of defrauding Ebay and thats just plain wrong.

It's simple, if you choose to sell on Ebay then you accept their fees, don't accept then find another way to sell your goods.
