Job advert seeking male applicants only - can I report it? And who to?

I thought it was pretty obvious that I said it's not a big issue and only needs mentioning to the shop owner, and not 'reporting'. Why should it be reported, and to who? should we send the shop keeper to prison because they wrongly advertised a job and said it was men only?
As stated it should be reported to EHRC, because it is important for them to have an accurate picture of where, why and how equality laws are being broken and because it is important to ensure employers understand their responsibilities.
Nobody is saying the employer should be sent to prison, this would clearly be a disproportionate response.0 -
It's sexism, plain and simple. What if it said 'white people only need apply' or 'only candidates aged between 20 and 25'? Yes, report it.0

Well the point's moot now anyway!
You may think it's ok for employers to discriminate based on gender when recruiting, thankfully however the law and the majority disagree with you. If you can come up with any kind of reasoned argument why a chip shop might need only male drivers then I'm happy to discuss.0 -
Have to say I am disappointed at the MSE team for deleting certain posts in this thread.
Whilst they may have been deemed offensive, they gave an insight into the racist, bigoted attitude of a certain poster and helped put their other comments into perspective. The only person to gain from the deletion is the poster in question.0 -

To be fair they probably don't have time to read the whole thread. One of the posts contained some particularly offensive language and if it hadn't been deleted then then it may have encouraged others to use similar unacceptable language. The poster in question could come back and make the same point in a sensible adult way. But I suspect it was a hacked account being used to troll.0 -
Funny how things change. 25 years ago I worked in bars, big busy hotel bars, where people drank a lot, and where trouble quite regularly threatened to 'kick-off'. When we saw trouble brewing our preference was always to send in a female duty manager to handle the situation, because:
a/ A female DM was more likely to be able to calm down the situation and smooth things over; and
b/ When it was a group of men kicking off they were less likely to lash out at a female than they would be a male.
I can't quite decide whether I think the situation we find ourselves in today is or isn't progress.0 -

...i do think we've gone backwards. These days common sense seems to have gone out of the window & it's more about the tick box culture.
My sister, who works with little children, told me a story today....
There's a kid at her work who came into work recently & had marks over their face. This child & their parents are 'non English' (don't want anyone to get upppity, i'm just giving the facts).
My sister asked how the child got these marks on their face & behind their ears. Child said - daddy did it (dad is apparently known for having a temper). Child told 3 other members of staff.
Sister reports this to her boss.
Boss says sister shouldn't bother writing a report as 1) the kid is leaving in a few weeks and 2) the one that really gets me - you're not allowed to ask the kid where the marks came from. You're not allowed to ask if they're ok. If their face is ok. The kid has to come to you.
Other staff didn't want to report it because 'don't want to offend that culture' and they may be seen as being racist. People daren't tackle the 'minority' these days for fear of being labelled something. It's pathetic.
So all these people would rather ignore this kid because it's too much hassle reporting it & potentially going against a different race. Yet it doesn't take a whizz to work out that this kid could be the next one on the news winding up dead & what did all the carers do for it?
Despite the rules saying the kid has to approach staff first, my sister wrote up the report anyway to cover herself & because she was concerned for the child. She fully expects her boss to shred the report though - what's the point.
Tick box culture. Computer says no. Where's the common sense? Ah that's right, it's been left behind, decades ago. Too much PC nonsense.0 -

I don't really see the relevance to this thread? Surely the bottom line is that you should treat all people the same, regardless of culture (as in your story)... or gender (as in the thread).Mortgage when started: £330,995

Report it to the NSPCC. Sounds like enough people know about it for the report to be anonymous.
A parent at school may report it anyway so at least the report is written up.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0
