Job advert seeking male applicants only - can I report it? And who to?

    The only reason women are seen as more vulnerable is because of situations exactly like this -- the way they are treated in society. Women are not physically weaker than men. They are only at more risk because of the societal opinion that they are, in some way, a weaker and easier target. It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

    I would do something about this. I'd probably start by having a quite word in the owner's ear (or even by letter), letting him know that not only is it illegal but I find it quite offensive as a customer.

    There are - but they are not recruited to do the same job as their male colleagues.

    They are primarily recruited to search handbags and to "frisk" female guests, and also are used to help when a female guest is drunk and/or in some kind of trouble (to avoid potential accusations of male doormen touching them inappropriately etc.).

    Men are more likely to be mugged than women. I guess we shouldn't hire men as night-time delivery drivers either?

    The responsibility on the employer if a man gets mugged doing the job is no less than if a woman gets raped doing the job. Why does this make it ok to discriminate against one and not the other?

    Not sure what you expect to achieve? The sign being amended or taken down? If they don't want a female driver you can't force them to employ one. They just remove that bit of the ad (forced or voluntary), but I doubt they'd change their stance.

    Are you one of these people who call the council on the bloke living 10 miles away, nowhere near your house & you've seen him doing building work but 'rumour has it' he might not have planning permission etc?
  • Plus, while I know men do get raped & women can be champion kick boxers..... Aren't we just taking this a little too far? Since when does a takeaway driver advert turn into a debate on blokes getting raped & martial arts?? Seriously!!

    Looks like "everyday sexism" to me. OP i think it is nice that you noticed and cared. All these small things do add up, and it makes a difference if we address attitudes little by little.

    So women should be allowed to work for NASA but not for the local chippy?

    I don't think discussion should be out of bounds because it's "only" a job at a chippy. Men and women should have equal access to any job unless there is a good and lawful reason.

    Send your friend in to apply for the job. If she gets the chance to, she can explain why she's qualified for the job and the qualities she'd bring, and also have these points written into an application letter. She hands them her cv and letter and tries really hard to do her best to get the job. If she's lucky, she might even persuade them to take her on, if she wants to work for them (not sure I would...). If, on the other hand, she doesn't get a job offer, then send in a (not especially super butch) male friend in to 'apply' for the job, and make sure that his 'cv' has a broadly similar range of qualities and experience, ditto the 'application' letter he drops in. If he gets a job offer, then, presumably, there's further evidence of sexual discrimination, in addition to the A4 job 'advert' on the lampost, and valid grounds for complaint.
