  • Other than Suzy Lamplugh, can you think of a single case of a woman getting raped/murdered when visiting a client

There was a case in 2006 of a support worker Ashleigh Ewing being murdered by her client.

Her employers Mental Health Matters were fined £30000 with 20k costs . They pleaded guilty to a charge brought by the Health and Safety Executive for a breach of Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 for failing to do all that was reasonably practicable to ensure Ms Ewing's safety.

Although when I was lone working supporting service users in an organisation with stringent lone working procedures I must admit I have still been in some scary situations.

In some situations being female actually helped . I remember one particular client would have been appalled by anyone suggesting he would hurt a woman ...men on the other hand were fair game in the clients eyes ..so his risk assesesment was female workers only.

Its all about treating the situations individually and not making generic assumptions.

Pet Peeves.... queues, vain people and hypocrites ..not necessarily in that order.

Does it really matter in the scheme of things?

So if the advert did not state men only and women apply. They are obviously wasting their time as they want to take a man on.

I would rather know beforehand and not waste my time applying.

Yes it does matter. If one advert like this here or there is allowed then soon it would become widespread. You may believe that it's ok to discriminate on gender when hiring but fortunately we live in a country where the law disagrees.

Ignorance of the law is no defence for the employer and I find it very hard to believe a chip shop could have a lawful reason for requiring a man for this role.

You're seeing this as an academic. Employers do not or will not put the time to check if the female is a martial artist, or research on homosexual rape statistics validity etc. Best to advertise for males only, and during interviews, choose the guy who is reliable and looks physically capable of defending himself. Why else do you always see bouncers and security guards dominated by huge looking men?
Where do you live where only men work at night?

This is a chippy delivery job. There is hardly any risk of anything happening to the driver...

As long as the chippy provides the employee no matter if they are male or female some way to contact base or the police in an emergency and knows where they are going to then I don't see why the chippy has any right to discriminate based on the gender of the applicant.

We have quite a few female bouncers round our way, as it happens.

    And back to the op....
The advert has most probably been put up niavely by someone you has'nt meant to cause offence. If it's bothering you, have a word with them and ask why they are only looking for men for that particular job.
Muggings and attacks are happening every week against delivery drivers and maybe they thought the job would be better suited to a male..
It may be bothering the OP if they are female and want to apply

The OP does'nt want the job, they said there housemate does, I wonder if the housemate is making an issue out of it?
Why report it to anyone, go in apply and point out that just by advertising for 'men only' they are breaking the law. Like i said they might be unaware of the issues surrounding that and who knows the housemate may be offered the job.

If the employer is unaware of the issues re the advert I wonder what else they are 'unaware' of!

Because it's important for the authorities to have a realistic picture of where equality laws are being broken and why so that they can help protect our rights. They will also be able to ensure that appropriate enforcement action is taken where necessary.

Everyone is assuming the employer that placed the ad is discriminating against woman. Maybe they are applying the law that that allows for advertising for men/women only due to the requirements of the particular job, which means it is lawful to employ only a man or woman.
Why does'nt the housemate just go in and ask about the job, it would'nt stop me enquiring if i needed a job. If i went in and was given the boot because i was a female and the job was'nt covered by the above, i would swiftly point out they are breaking the law and then report them.
