If OP or her friend is looking for some compensation payout she won't realistically be getting a single penny.
No, no grey areas at all, pretty black and white.Stating a preference for a man or woman in a job advertisement is unlawful sex discrimination unless the requirements of the particular job mean that it is lawful to employ only a man or a woman.0 -
Pretty much as above. A local chippy is advertising for a delivery driver and poster in their window says male applicants only. Pretty sure this is not allowed?
You've opened up a can of worms with this one. They shouldn't be allowed to discriminate with gender, but hardly worth reporting is it?Lao Tzu - "Give a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime"

It made me very angry listening to the radio a few weeks ago listening to employers stating they will not under any circumstances hire a young woman due to the fact they could get pregnant. They knew all the loopholes. Advertise for anyone and bin all the CV's from anyone that appeared to be young and female. Nobody need ever know.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Does it really matter in the scheme of things?
So if the advert did not state men only and women apply. They are obviously wasting their time as they want to take a man on.
I would rather know beforehand and not waste my time applying.0 -
Do you want the role? Also, you think that bad. I have visited the Middle East a few times and their advertisments often ask for photos of women!!0

Not all men are able to defend themselves and regardless of who you are, there is always someone bigger, harder, uglier than you.
You can not make huge generalisations like this based on gender.
As for homosexual rape (random attack by complete stranger), is it statistically lower because it happens less or is reported less?
You're seeing this as an academic. Employers do not or will not put the time to check if the female is a martial artist, or research on homosexual rape statistics validity etc. Best to advertise for males only, and during interviews, choose the guy who is reliable and looks physically capable of defending himself. Why else do you always see bouncers and security guards dominated by huge looking men?0 -

I never said sex discrimination is lawful. I said it's a grey area in the justification of why a male is being advertised for. There's plenty of reasons the employer can find, and it's a long lengthy process if you want to complain. Chances are if you try to sue, you'll be wasting your own time and money.0 -

Me, an academic :rotfl:

If they had a genuine occupational requirement for employing a man, they should say so. Most of our jobs are women only and that's what we do.
However, in the OP's flatmate's case, I'd call in and ask why it has to be a man, take the kick boxing certificates, and see what they say.Signature removed for peace of mind0
