Of course you are aware that if the oncoming car, with the cars on their side of the road, has already committed to the overtaking procedure whilst you are approaching, you must give way.

Because there seems to be a lot of people who are not.

And my favourite is stupid motorists who don't understand Highway Code rule 170, that pedestrians have the right of way when crossing at a junction you are turning into.

this is my bug-bear. I drive down a residential road every day where 6 or 7 cars are parked on my side of the road so obviously I have to "commit" to passing them all, no place to pull in. I go slowly because the road curves round and its not poss to see cars coming toward me. However the drivers on the other side tear round the bend at 30mph despite the fact they can't see round the bend either, and they make it clear that they expect to be allowed to pass, no allowance made for me not being able to pull in.

sorry not a very concise description, too much chocolate cake to late at night !

tbh, I cant think of any other consumer product where you can be 99.9% sure that the product will be used to break the law.

Local 30 and 20 mph limits can make sense, and exceeding them is irresponsible; they can often relate to the needs of other road users and pedestrians or cyclists.

However, the 70 motorway limit is an arbitrary number chosen by committee, and the actual safe limit is very dependent upon the conditions and how busy the road is.

Anyone who uses the phase "its a speed limit not a target" needs their driving licence taken from them. Or more preferably shot in the face.

Oh, go on then. Tell us why.

TL;DR. I'm a cyclist. Today I approached a junction with a major road. As I did so, a car pulled away from the kerb on the right, into traffic, without indicating. It was a relatively narrow minor road and a chunky car so I had to make a minor adjustment to avoid her. Once I'd stopped at the junction and was waiting for a chance to turn right, two cars passed from right to left, both drivers using their mobile phones while the car was in motion.

I see this stuff all the time. I don't expect drivers to indicate when the pull away from the kerb any more.

Before this turns into an anti-cyclist rant in response: the cyclists I see are seldom much better. I've been passed many times at red traffic lights by cyclists who've not slowed down at all and just gone straight through the red light and across the junction.

We need more traffic police, and we need more of the traffic laws to be enforced. It's turning into a free-for-all out there.

Probably because they have decided to make up their own rules and abandon those they learned to pass their test.

Doing 40mph or less on a 60mph road (when its safe to drive at 60) makes the road less safe, not more, especially on single lane roads. The roads are far safer when cars are moving at similar speeds as you're less likely to crash into the car in front.

That's part of the reason why the government won't increase the speed limit on motorways even though modern cars are safer. Someone put a petition for that on that government petition site that used to run. They said they couldn't do it safely because then the speed difference between cars and trucks would be too high.

I don't know how common place this is, but there is one country road I drive down with quite a tight blind bend. It's possible to drive round it at 50+, but the trees make it impossible to see what's around the corner.

There is a farmhouse on the corner of this bend, and they have their shopping delivered. The delivery van parks just before the blind bend, meaning the only way past is to overtake on the blind bend.

Even worse is when it chooses to park just around the blind bend so I have to brake hard while driving around the corner. I'm amazed no one has driven into the back of me yet.

Apart from the fact that you can use it to illegally disseminate official secrets you could always drop it on someone's head.

The speed you 'can' drive around a bend is the lower of:

    1) The speed that the vehicle is physically capable of taking the bend.

    2) The speed that will enable you to stop safely should you encounter an obstruction on the bend.
