Wetherspoons

Personally I dont go into Wetherspoons for much more than a drink these days. My local pub has revamped its menu a few times over the last few years and every time they do, the price of the food rises. Its something like 7 quid for fish and chips now, a few years back it was £4. A plate of macaroni cheese is over £6. Its promoted as a cheap chain, the food really isnt that cheap anymore and given that you can get a cheap pub lunch in a few places in my local area, plus a really good quality restaurant that does cooked on the premises food and huge portions for under £8 for 2 courses, wetherspoons isnt a first choice really.
You cant beat it for drink prices, but where I live at least, thats about it.
You're not the only one PaulineB; we find ourselves eating less and less in 'Spoons for all the above reasons.
Regarding both the drinks prices and menus pricing, my experience of visiting close on 600 of their pubs, is that they all have different price bands for food and drink according to a combination of, what the local competition charges/how affluent the area is/whether the pub is leased or owned/how much the conversion cost and no doubt other factors.
That said, one constant price with very few exceptions is the breakfast menu. Some while ago, like a previous poster, I came across a Merseyside 'Spoons offering the traditional breakfast at £1.99 but this was a local promotion and the exception to the rule.
Very recently the Master Mariner in New Brighton was doing an experiment with a basic breakfast at £1.99 consisting of one each of egg/sausage/bacon rasher/hash brown/beans? with more available at 50p per item.
Another local promotion saw one of the Middlesbrough 'Spoons doing a burger and chips at £1.99 which along with a very cheap pint of ale, worked out less than the "Burger & Beer" offer!
Back in June I had Steak Club at £4.99 in Llanelli, as opposed to up to £8.99 elsewhere.
The biggest problem I have with JDW these days is not price, but the ever lower quality of their food, made worse by the low level of care given to preparing and serving the same food. Take the perennial cold plate issue; a four lamp heat cabinet is meant to have 4 plates on it, one squarely under each heat lamp, not six plates spread across the same area creating cold spots.
Anyhow, enough before this turns into a rant!:beer:0 -
Number of Yates = 72
Number of O'Neils = 49
Number of Weatherspoons = 880
Don't let the facts get in the way of your argument
Yet again, I was just using examples of large chains. If you want to be pedantic, then lets just compare them to Whitbread.
Oh, by the way, Lloyds are also the same group as Wetherspoons. And they aren't cheap. So that sort of blows your theory out of the window.
Anyway, I've just noticed who you are, and that you have a reputation for just arguing for the sake of it.0 -

Yep you're looking foolish so lets attack me as opposed to trying to defend your argument!
Whitbread have about 300 pubs branded under their different names e.g. Brewer's fayre, top table, Beefeater.
They also target families and are more known for selling food than beer. They therefore buy and sell nowhere near as much beer as Wetherspoons do...This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I'm afraid you get what you pay for. But if there aren't any other pubs in the same area doing lunchtime offers, then I will use Wetherspoons. I don't know if they microwave pre-cooked food like some other large pub chains do, but it wouldn't surprise me.0 -

Why don't you ask your "mate" and then report back?
As a manager of Wetherspoons he should surely know what goes on in his kitchen....This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

You don't understand business, or economics, and obviously have no knowledge about running pubs.
You would argue in an empty room, so I'm not going to continue with your game, as you are just continuing your usual style of posting (anyone can see your previous posts).

Yep you're right the fact I believe in economies of scale mean that I don't understand business or economics...
The definition of arguing in an empty room means i would be arguing with myself. That is not true as I am arguing with you.
Unless of course you like your "mate" don't actually exist. In which case this is all in my imagination.

In the mornings there is a separate small printed card on the tables with the breakfast prices on it, the "traditional" one is about 2/3 of the way down.
Just had one today, £3.95 for the traditional, £4.95 for the large.
It was good though. I like it even better as my local has stopped doing those annoying packets and now have sauces in bottles and a proper salt and pepper pot!
