Not an easy one but do you all have a Will? Do you have a file with all the important documents in, savings, insurance details etc. Unfortunately too many of us know that life has a tendency to toss a curved ball.
Having a lovely evening.

I have a will. It's kept with all the paperwork in the large cupboard and BiL and SiL have the copies of it in their paperwork. They know where to find all of our bits and pieces and I actually have a control journal . I will check this though as it could probably do with being updated somewhat.
Having a lovely evening.
I know I am biased but I do feel very strongly about this. DH wasn't keen originally but once he was having tests, his mum bought him a post office DIY one. He told me to write it and he would sign it. And aren't we so glad he did! And one of the first things I then did was got my own updated and put instructions for guardianship and a trust for the children. Just in case.
Even though most of our stuff was joint, and we were married. It still would have been impossibly difficult to deal with at an already distressing time. Lecture over
My ears are ringing. I had a lovely time but sad coming home to an empty house. The silence is deafening.

Have had a look through a couple of pages, hope no-one minds me asking, does anyone have a suggestion for a cheap way for my husband and I to get wills wrote up?
Do we need someone special to sign them? Reading bossymoo's post has made me think that you never know what is going to come along (thanks for sharing your personal experience - really meant something to me).
Great hat pigpen, so many cool things on this thread!

Katykicker, http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/family/free-cheap-wills you may be able to get a cheap or free will through union membership.
Bossy, we had ours written just after DS was born. I remember being picked up for my best friends hen do and making 2 people get out of the car and come upstairs to witness our wills before I would leave home.
We have guardians named for the kids and finances in place to go to the trustees who would also be guardians. We left the organisation of trusts to them as we paid extra for our wills so that we had free updates and free legal assistance for our executors.
The wills are fine it's just things in the control journal such as mortgage company details can be removed now and we have a new bank account which I need to add on.
Perhaps I'll bring it in to work with me tonight to update during my break time.

Katykicker in the first instance we just had very simple mirror wills naming each other as sole executor and beneficiary. But our situation was simple; neither of us had married before or had children from previous relationships. His parents witnessed them. I think witnesses cannot be beneficiaries? It was just a very quick, cheap way of doing it. But as I say, neither of us had anyone who could contest a will like that. Cost less than a tenner for both of us. Even though they were hand-written they were still perfectly acceptable to the bank / pension company etc.
My newer one is a little more complex as it details the guardianship and trust requirements. So I had this drawn up by a local solicitor. It cost £125 and they store a copy in their vault and I can update it whenever I need to.
I have a copy at home too (my mum and inlaws know what's in it and where it is) and I keep a list of account details and policy numbers etc with it, to make their job easier if anything happened to me.
I would say its very important if you are not married too. Legally you are not next of kin, and I know of young widows losing their homes because their partner died intestate and they weren't named on mortgages and grown up "step" children evicted them
I really will stop harping on about it now. :rotfl:Bossymoo

Morning all
Wills - it was thanks to Jo that this is on the list, she asked for it after our lovely Toots passing but it was too raw for me to put on that week. I confess we have never done our as we don't have anybody we'd be happy to have our kids if we both passed. No excuse for not having individual ones, so we will do those and with DS1 being 19 and DS2 being 17 it is almost harder on the guardianship bit.
I've done another 10 minutes of paperwork. Off to the shower now as I need to take DS3 to squash and then pop to Mr LThe birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0 -
