I didn't tell you to remove the battery first, because it isn't necessary. I'm only suggesting it because you clearly were unable to follow the instruction to restart and boot from the CD.

My bedside manner improves when I am being paid. If I'm giving you my time freely, try not to waste it, by following the written instruction to the letter.
With all due respect Nifty , I followed your instructions to the letter, but, told you, nothing appeared on the screen so could NOT press anything.Could not boot from cd or any other way.
I stated safe mode couldn,t be obtained even, so it was nescessary to remove the battery , which, I,ve never had to do before.
If nothing appears on the screen , one cannot follow it?
    Perhaps you can.
Sorry if you feel I,ve wasted your time,.but, thankyou for it , much appreciated, the outcome was a success.

From your replies, it didn't appear that you were following the instruction. :)

But I'm happy that it is back up and running. Sending you a PM.

    Modem: built-in 56K, V.92 fax modem
Operating system: Windows Vista Home Basic

    This machine needs more RAM.

With my help you should update the BIOS(if you haven't already done so), as it will allow you to use 2GB RAM modules.

You'll have a completely different machine.

Without the upgrade, you are not doing justice to the machine and it will continue to be treated with disrespect. :)

You can buy new 1GB modules for £4.99 each. That alone will make a difference.

Hi Nifty, it,s the pain again.
Regarding more Ram. The Pc is still freezing in idle mode,as you said it would. Son,s just told me, so perhaps another 1Gb would be beneficial as you said.
My grandson has a spare 1gb of Ram, he didn,t use for his laptop, would that do? OR, is it special, like the 1 you specified.
Also, is it just a matter of unscrewing the back, and swapping it?or is there more to it and retain Vista?
    Never changed Ram before.

    Now you're being silly. :)

You'll need to tell me what is written on your Grandson's RAM.

Ludicrously simple to fit RAM in this case.

Remove from power. Remove battery. Unscrew panel. Slot in new RAM.

Slides in at an angle and then you press it flat. Five minute job max.

Hi Nifty, probably was a daft question.Don,t know what Ram he,s got yet, he just said he had a spare 1gb he bought fo his and didn,t use.I, will find out or send for the one you gave me.if that,s the correct one for Pc ??thanks for diagram.

As long as it is SODIMM(for laptops) DDR2 it will be fine. If it is DDR(1) or DDR3, it won't fit.
Do you remove old ram, or, is it just extra module?

Ideally, you want 2 x 1GB. But adding the 1GB module will bring it to 1.5GB, which is adequate.
Clean install later will bring it up to speed. ;)
