I don't know what status you expect a dog to have, they're not human no matter how much we love them, they're animals. Where would you draw the line? Should cats have status? Horses? Hamsters? Rats? Snakes? They're all pets loved by their owners.

Do you want pets to have the same status as children or spouses? Do you want them to be free to choose in whose home they live? I bet you'd soon want your dog classed as property if it were stolen.

Just saw this post and I am outraged. The answer to all your questions about their staus who ever you are is. cats yes ,horses yes, hamsters yes, rats yes, snakes yes etc.. They are all sentinent beings that feel pain and give love. Yes we call them animals and we call ourselves humans that is just words we have created. You are very sad person

Hachette, if I were you I wouldn't bother any more trying to post the letter.

As oli.s says, far more eloquently than I can, there is no point in trying to convince others.

Thank you. Yes, lets see what happens. I know I have all all my friends supporting me, needless to say they are all animal lovers.

You are going on about law though, not sentiment or emotion and under UK law a dog or cat has less value than a sheep or cow.

But isn't a dog considered to be a working animal (even if it isn't iyswim) and that's why you have to report hitting one still?

  • Is basically the advice people are giving the op if they went to court the op could lose and have to pay the other parties legal costs which the total cost (op's + vet) could maybe as high a five figures?

Also I agree with Peachyprice above.

Do you drive? I hope not.

I am sure you make things up as you post on here. You have no obligation to report hitting a cat, rabbit, hedgehog nor pigeon.

    are you serious?

I think you will find that if you reported hitting a hedgehog, not to mention a pigeon,or a rabbit) the police would be called away as laughing in your face often offends.

    From https://www.askthe.police.uk/content/Q434.htm:
Q434: I have knocked over an animal, do I have to report it?
Some animals do not come within the definition of animal within the Road Traffic Act 1988 so you are not required to report it to the police. However, it may be worth contacting the police to inform them of the incident. Also the local authority will need to be contacted to remove the remains of the animal.

See the website in related information to find your local authority.

A dog (as well as a goat, horse, cattle, !!!, mule, sheep and pig) does come within the remit of the Road Traffic Act and is a reportable accident so you are required by law to report it to the police.
Interesting to note that cat, rabbit, hedgehog, pigeon, are not on that list.

Oops... the !!! should be ass. ;)

No, I am not a very sad person, please don't call me names because I don't share your bizarre opinion.

And your answers to the other questions please. If your dog were stolen would you report it to the police and expect it's return? What status do you expect animals to have?

I don't think you've thought this whole status thing through properly, so say animals did have the same status as humans, you wouldn't have had your pet in the first place.

The idea of human pets it outrageous, give animals the same status and it becomes no different. It would be as wrong to take an animal from it's natural environment and force it to live in your home as it would a human, there would be no pets, no farms, no zoos. You couldn't do it to a human so why do you think would you be able to do it to an animal of the same status?
