Is Trusteer/Rapport necessary to be protected by banks' fraud guarantees?

Options
I see a few banks and building societies' online banking sites promote the download and use of a Trusteer add-on.

However, I was wondering if this is actually compulsory, in the event of onling fraud taking place - would a bank see the non-use of the software as a reason not to consider an online fraud claim, should the case arise?

I've installed the add-on in the past and to be honest, found it a nuisance as it loaded pop-up messages at every site I typed a username/password in, and seemed to slow down Firefox.

I have not seen any T&Cs that prescribe the use of a particular piece of software. But double check you own T&Cs.

No it's not compulsory. For one thing, it only runs on Windows PCs. If you are using a Mac, Linux, Android, iOS etc it's not available and so you can't be expected to use it!

Yes this is another good reason not to install it!

I think it is basically the banks trying to cover themselves. As I it is possible that malware could get on to your PC if you access the internet with no protection (no anti-virus or firewall) and for example log your keystrokes and send it to someone else who could use that information to log on to your online banking. However if this happens and you don't know about it then it's still fraud and you'd still be protected. I think the only argument might be if you have no anti-virus software you could be considered negligent, but I doubt this would be enough for a bank to throw out any claim.

You'd be daft not to install it. It is an attempt to protect all parties.
Why on earth would you want to do online banking and leave yourself open to fraud attempts? True the bank is liable for fraud but you have the misery of dealing with it!

It would be a hard one for any bank to pin any fraud on the lack of 3rd party software. Whose to say which version you should be running, some people aren't allowed to install software on the machine they are using.

This software won't stop stuff like KVMs or every exploit nor can it be run on mobiles.

No, you would be daft to install Rapport - it is totally unnecessary and causes problems!

Think you're missing an un- in front of 'necessary' there!

Am I right in assuming that those of you - who have a PC capable of running this software - have chosen not to install or keep it?

Tried it, didn't like it, uninstalled it! Searching on Google for 'trusteer rapport problems' gives 18,100 matches, albeit some of them are '...no problems...'

You're right. I have accounts with N&P and Santander, and both prompt me to install Rapport every time I log in.

I've never installed it and don't plan to.

Same here, get it everytime I go onto N&P's login - Nationwide seem to keenly promote it too, amongst others.
Did see a lot of reported problems on Google so I'm glad it's not just me!
