Dont want to marry in white!

It's amazing how many of our traditions are actually really modern.
I have seen lots of brides wearing other coloured dresses, not just now, but in old photos too. I think they look lovely. I look terrible in pale colours so would definitely wear something different.
OP - if anyone comments just say, "I've been such a total slapper in my life that I really didn't feel it was appropriate to wear virginal white". That will shut them up!
I believe the white dress tradition is a sign of wealth - to wear a white dress in Victorian days showed that you were wealthy enough to own an impractical coloured dress.0 -
I have a friend who married in a red meringue. And one of the first questions she asked her DH publicly was 'does my bum look big in this?' :rotfl:
:rotfl: This made me think of Lydia's wedding outfit in Beetlejuice! Something I'd quite like to do actually, but I'd be swamped in a meringue style dress.
I'm not wearing white either- I hate the connotations of it, and both my partner and I are quite untraditional anyway. I've chosen green as it's my favourite colour.0 -
I am another one who says
Wear whatever you like, your day, your choice.
I love all you adventurious bride, I would have loved a red dressTreat other's how you like to be treated.

Oh shucks if I had known that years ago, I wouldn't have paid thousands to get divorced. The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.0 -
It has only been 'traditional' for a bride to marry in white since Victorian times and there have ALWAYS been brides who have gone their own way!
It is your wedding and you can wear what you want to wear!
I actually think it more recent than that - at least for the working class. Both of my grandmothers married in the 1920s in their "best" dresses, not white gowns.
One of them was fond of the saying "you should wear black to weddings because your troubles are just beginning, and white to funerals, because your troubles are over". She herself had a happy marriage, but had been responsible for younger siblings because of her own mother's "troubles". When I learned that white was traditional mourning in many cultures she was amused!0 -

I think red is a great colour to get married in!
I don't much like the traditional white wedding dresses myself, - they seem very old-fashioned now.0
