No problem with speed at tills, nothing worse than the till operative who discusses every item you have bought, or gives you their life story.

They state their 500th will open on 31st October in Bury St Edmunds, except I know they are also opening a new Leeds store on that date!

Ah yes. I stopped doing my 'big shop' at the local asda as every assistant who worked at the particular day and time I was there had to pass comment on most of the contents of the trolley eg

    'Ooh, what are these like?'
    'Oh that's an odd flavour'
    And my personal favourite -
'You do buy a strange combination of things, and there's a lot of meat her just for two people!'

I wouldn't appreciate those comment off my friends, never mind a stranger! A bit of small talk's fine but come on!

Better quality experience and products at aldi ;)

    Couldn't agree more!

I'm a massive Aldi fan and buy as much as possible from there but whenever I need to go to the "big" supermarkets, I always use the self-service checkout for two reasons.

Firstly so I can help myself to as many of their thinner than thin plastic bags as I like as opposed to having to constantly ask for another one, then another one ad infinitum.

And secondly, I just can't handle the inane conversation about the weather, how Christmas gets earlier every year and how their niece Tracey has just got into Leicester uni.

No offense to any supermarket cashiers out there in MoneySaverLand but the self-service checkout has made my life a welcome 7% better and I'd rather queue up there and wait to serve myself than ever go through a non-Aldi speedy checkout ever again.

I know I sound like a miserable ******* but I have enough inane conversations in my everyday job, I don't want anymore when I'm not actually being paid to listen.

So, yeah - love it when the friendly bods in Aldi chuck it through like they have Six Million Dollar bionic arms and I'm out of the shop within minutes. Suits me just fine.

I'm sure it's not your intention to post in a manner which is likely to put off disabled or other customers who may require assistance from shopping in Aldi but I am afraid that is exactly what your comments are likely to do. A number in that bracket are on fixed income some looking to shop as economically as possible.

It is wrong to state that the check out assistants do not have the option to slow down. This is a supermarket we are talking about not a correctional facility. All cashiers will have parameters to work to but to suggest those parameters mean every single transaction has to go through at the speed of light is wrong.

I'm in my local Aldi a couple of times a week as it's just down the road from me and I've seen on numerous occasions cashiers adjusting their speed, usually without the customer having to say anything.

I also mystery shop a wide range of supermarkets from posh high street to European owned. I am not allowed to give specifics for particular supermarkets but I know what service requirements are stipulated by those supermarkets. More than one states specifically that the operator has to adjust their speed and not allow items to pile up. If they do not adhere to that company policy they are marked down in that stores mystery shopping report. I'll let people make up their own mind what supermarkets I'm referring to.

I do love Aldi when I can shop there but I'm afraid having shopped in 2 separate stores in the South I've left the store in tears as shopping was flying off the end of checkout faster than I could manage to move them with quite a few items landing on the floor. Not exactly helpful especially as I asked them to please slow down a little. I do always try to shop at less manic times although disabled I do still work so that's not always the easiest but I hate the busy stores anyway as it just makes my life a little harder. My salary is less since my disability developed so I try to shop in a place where the value is better and actually good quality. I even wrote to the managers of the 2 stores concerned but had no answer to my letter.

On a positive I've also been into stores in the Midlands where they are so much more helpful and show consideration. I can only hope my experience is isolated and others not affected.

I am glad they do get the mystery shoppers in these stores too and perhaps one day the ones reasonably local to me will get a mystery shopper with a disability and learn from the experience
  • Hi, I love Aldi and shop there usually shop there once a week with trips to Tesco, Morrisons and Homebargains.

Aldi is great for essentials such as milk which usually has longer dates and is cheaper than other supermarkets. All the cleaning products are great and cheaper than anywhere else, they have won may Goodhousekeeping awards.

My youngest will only eat their beans and loves their biscuits. The tills I find easiest to tackle by using the shopping bags from tesco (usually the Orla Keely not very mse but I love them) and pack the shopping in order on the conveyer belt like the MysteryMe. I have to put my shop and my disabled mothers shop through one after the other.

Great thread - I have been using Aldi & Lidl for years and always have found them good on quality & value. We can be too snobby sometimes about brands! I ventured into B&M for the first time a couple of weeks ago & was horrified to find Peppa Pig House at £14.99 when I had purchased it at Toys R Us for £29.99 only a couple of days prior. If I had been able I would have been back & got a refund but I had already given the house as a gift.

I finally got OH to try Aldi about a year ago and he loves it now. We combine a trip there with one to Asda (near each other) for fiddly bits, for example I'm lactose intolerant and Aldi don't cater for that. But for the basics - whoo hoo! Last year they had lots of interesting things in the frozen cabinet for Christmas like stuffed pheasant and other game. And their wine selection is very good.

The only problem I have is we usually go first thing Thursday morning and the mainly v young shelf stackers whizz around like lunatics. As I am disabled this can be a bit disconcerting. One day I am sure I will end up face first in a pile of bananas! :rotfl:

Unless they sort out the parking scammers in the car park, the profit increases will be very short lived.
They have let the wolf amongst the chickens and those that think they are safe following the rules are perfect fodder for them.
They are targeting hundreds of motorists a week with these through the post parking charges, ask yourself this, how are you going to prove you were not in breech of what the parking scammers claim ?
Is it simply worth the risk ?
    Be happy...;)
