I went to quite a good school and I have memories of people being teased if the items in their lunch boxed weren't branded. Woe betide you didn't have Walkers crisps... ridiculous I know!

And I think this has put me off shopping in Aldi/Lidl as it brings back bad memories, but I think having read this thread I'll give it a go again! :)

Good to hear you're fighting your demons!;) I think you'd be pleasantly surprised at the sort of clientele in Aldi. It's a truism that people with money have it because they're careful. It's the social climbers/nouveaus who have to use their wealth to show off. If you're that worried about brands then put food in little plastic tubs. No child needs a whole packet of crisps every day anyway!

How very right you are! In this neck of the woods the ones with the money are more than comfortable to shop at Aldi and Lidl and are happy to spread the word.

It's the ones who can least afford it that are sticking to the likes of Tesco, because they worry about being seen in Aldi!

The Aldi here is about as middle class as you can get - more than can be said for the Tesco and Asda. After everyones done their bulk shopping in Aldi, they meet up in Waitrose for a chat, a coffee, a top-up shop and a lot of socialising!

    Who needs Tesco? :)

Oh I don't have kids, it's just me! I completely agree, but I think growing up amongst people who always tried to look better than they were, it does affect your opinion! My parents worked really hard to get to where they are, and have always been down to earth and have taught me the meaning of money, I just honestly hadn't thought about shopping there!

I couldn't care less about brands to be honest!

Need to pick up some bits tomorrow after work, so I shall pay a visit then! :)
  • If I'm in the vicinity of an Aldi I do try to stock up on some things. Unfortunately there isn't one near to me without a serious 40 min plus drive so savings there are more than obliterated in cost of fuel getting there.
Lidl I do pop into quite regularly and I'm generally more than happy with quality etc.
However I have one problem I need to be feeling well to tackle either of them for more than a basket of things. I physically cannot manage a big shop in either of these gem like shops with great deals due to disability issues. I cannot get all the items on and off the conveyor fast enough to get through the checkout without making myself ill. Please don't say just chuck it in the trolley and sort later because that just adds to the amount of lifting and general requirement of puff needed to complete the task. I have on occasion asked for help but none was forthcoming. Its sad that I need to go to the big 4 in order to get the help I need which in reality is little beyond checkout operator going slow, to get my shopping and pay more for it. Anyone else had any success in getting a bit extra help in the gems that are Lidl or Aldi?

The staff cant assist as they have other jobs to do as its just a small amount of staff whereas if there were more staff in then yes you might be able to have assistance. Tyhe staff on the checkout can't assist as they are on the clock/have to scan x amount of item a minute or is it an hour but you get the gist.

I get it but don't like it they cannot find some way of helping even if its just go slow. After all why should I be forced out of shopping there just because I have a disability.

The checkout operator should adjust their speed, ask them to slow down if they don't. Do speak to the store manager, everyone should be able to shop in their store.

I've seen people have those wide flat bottomed bags that they place in trollies and put stuff straight into them so only packing once.

I make sure all the heavy items are on the belt first so they are first into the bag and at the bottom. Stuff like eggs and fruit goes on last and they end up at the top of the bag.

They don't have the option to slow down. Checkout speed is heavily targeted in both Aldi and Lidl and they have to rattle the stuff through to avoid losing pay.
