You put the things from your trolley onto the belt then put the trolley the other side.

As the items are scanned you put them back in the trolley and take them to the packing area where you can take as much time as you want.

The problem arises with the idiots that want to bag the stuff as it is scanned.

    Simple enough for everyone.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Speaking as one of those idiots:D

I have my bags ready open in the trolley and my goods placed in the order I want them to come through on the conveyor. So I can quickly put my bottles, jars, packets and heavy veg into the bags then arrange more delicate stuff around/on top of them.

    It's not rocket science!!!

I have just returned from my second Aldi shop, using my second £5 off voucher, and my total was (drum roll please)....

£55.42! (Plus the 50p for the Mirror)

Ok, so there were a few items on my list that I couldn't get at Aldi, so I will have to go to MrT to top up (using my double clubcard points vouchers that I was kindly sent through this week), but I can't believe how much I have saved already this month.

Bargain of the morning was a packet of 1300 salad bowl lettuce seeds for the princely sum of 19p. I have recently started growing a bit of my own veg, but intend to increase production next year.

So as I generally pay £1 per week for a bag of mixed lettuce leaves (and they are creeping up above that price these days) 1300 salad bowl lettuces for 19p equates to 0.015p per lettuce, and a potential saving of over 99p per week in lettuce alone! :T
    Extra Payment Every Week Challenge:
    Week 1: £29.68
    Week 2: £14.95
    Week 3: £5.05

Can someone explain how the checkout works please? Its sounds a nightmare!

The difference between the tills at Aldi (and Lidl) and say Tesco is that the "runway" runs out almost immediately after the till - so there is no large area for your items to sit while you bag your items. You literally have to put them straight into your bags, box or trolley.

Conversely, the conveyor belt before the till is longer than anything you'll find in a Tesco!

But, you very quickly get used to it.

Agreed- I find the tills in Tesco an absolute pain now and love the challenge of keeping up with the operators in Aldi. Have also experienced the letting in of customers with a couple of items (both as the giver and receiver of the kindness).

Basket users have little choice though, as (in our store at least) it's against the rules to take the basket through the till. Personally I use a box instead of a basket, which avoids the problem.

Have you seen anybody do a big shop that fills a standard trolley?
Is it possible in an hour with their parking restrictions?

I wish we had an Aldi near us. I love Aldi's chocolate, bought a load of cherry liqueurs and truffles from there last Christmas instead of the usual overpriced Christmas tubs and was pleasantly surprised. Anything by "Choceur" is usually good (but not to your waistline :D), especially the praline bars!
  • I bought hubby a Pork pie from sainsburys this afternnon to go with his lunch before work - He was amazed " that pork pie I had from |Aldi last week was much better than this"

My husband is a snob and rather fussy when it comes to food lol

    Aldi is fab

  • Whatever supermarket I use I always put my shopping bags in the trolley after loading the shopping on the belt, simple to just put the goods into the bags within the trolley (starting with the heavy items) the fridge and freezer stuff goes into a cool bag and the lighter stuff goes on the belt last so doesn't get squashed. I find it easier to unpack when I get home as well by keeping all the tins/dry goods together ready to go in the correct cupboard.
I do my main shop in either Aldi or Lidl mainly because it is cheaper but also because of the quality and there are items such as Lidl chocolate spread (the stripy one with blue lid) or the frozen mozzarella pizza (twin pack) that we prefer to branded goods and of course it makes the money go further. The tea bags (the ordinary ones and Earl Gray) are good as well.

I also go to Farmfoods once a month or so as they have some bargains. Anything else we get in Morrisons or Sainsbury although the 'top-up' shop always includes a few more items than on the list (personal record was over £20 spent when I only really wanted some bread and milk)
