Well done you! They are impressively low calories. I heard that you should have no lower than 1200 in case you go into starvation mode but OH is trying to convince me that this is rubbish and I should eat as little as possible!

Today I've had 1124 and walked the dogs for 30 minutes.

Tomorrow I need to go to the gym but I am eating at my parent's for a birthday meal so I think my calories count for dinner is going to be high :(

My non accurate scales say that I have lost 5lbs in 8 days but they frequently lie.

I think going below that constantly is dangerous for that reason Fmess but if its only occasional then I wouldn't worry too much. But one thing that mfp does stress is that you should eat back exersize calories so its no less than 1200 net calories.

Don't worry about the calories... ended up having the can of coke (not as many calories as I thought), a packet of crisps and a mint aero (bloody vending machine).
    :p

Ate the crisps before midnight, the aero at 05:00 and drank the coke over the course of the shift.
    :o

It did warn me about starvation mode when I put the coke in for today, it meant I was at 1,133 or something like that for yesterday and it did warn me about starvation mode.
    :undecided

When you say net calories... you mean the calories you are left with after you have exercised is that right?? (sorry, I get muddled a lot).
    :embarasse

Sooooooo... in case you haven't guessed, the vending machine means that today is a spend day. Boo hiss.
    :(

However, it also means that I am going to co$tco with my mummy!!
    :j

The plan is to buy some new washing powder liquid things as for some odd reason I have become allergic to ariel. Which is crazy as I have used it since I was born (my mum always used ariel). I am now reverting back to the baby-stage as I am now on fairy non-biological.
    :p

The price is ridiculous though (more so as I used to steal ariel tablets from my mum)... £3 for 10!!

Hope everyone has a good day and that they stick to their diets better than I have.
    Hugs.

are you using myfitnesspal stewby? if so, when you set up your profile it will ask you how active you are and your ideal weekly weight loss and tell you what your allowance. yours will be higher than say mine as you are more active day to day in your job without doing exercise. on days you dont do exercise just aim for your target. if you do exercise then it will subtract the calories burnt from what you have done from calories eaten and tell you your net calories.

thats interesting about the net calorie warning scuba as whilst i get a message if i have consumed less than my goal calories i dont get a message if my net is under. on exercise days my net is nearly always under as i do gym classes and then swim so will burn off anywhere between 800-1100 calories and is nearly impossible to eat more to stick to the net (as my normal food is around 1300-1500). i once did a body combat class, 20 min swim and then walked in the city which which was an hour. burnt of 1300 calories. i ate a whole choc orange and was still 300 under my net!!!

i agree re sustained not eating enough- watched embarrasing fat bodies and there was a lady that had lost 14 stone in 2 years. as it was so quick they made her have a bone scan before letting her have surgery to make sure she hadnt caused any harm.

I'm sure you are not supposed to eat the calories that you use exercising on top of your allowance, if your aim is to lose weight. Surely the more you exercise, the more calories burnt so the more wright you would lose. If you eat those calories again then you'll not be burning fat, you'll just burn the calories in the food you ate.

Nope because you put your body in to starvation mode that way.

You burn calories while exersizing, but they reckon that the absolute safe minimum to survive without being nutritionally deficient is around 1200 calories, so if you're exersizing and burning more than that you're effectively starving yourself.

Don't forget that the more you use your muscles for exersize the higher your natural metabolic rate will become so long term it gets easier to lose weight on the restricted diet (obviously this only works to a point then you plateau and either have to kick up the exersize eat less) and then maintain your new weight.

MFP at least works on the principle that you'll lose weight through eating fewer calories but you'll not maintain it long term without exersizing too. That said I tend to try to eat back at least half of my exersize burned calories, I rarely eat back all of them unless I'm having a gluttonous day.

And saying this is making me feel guilty that I've spent the last few days eating rubbish and not running so should go get changed and go out while it's not raining. :o

What about programs like The Biggest Loser? They exercise for 8 hours a day and have a strict low calorie diet. Surely they should be eating more because of all the exercise?

I guess its considered short term and is under very strict Dr supervision, plus they're showing people who are in need of losing 100 lb+ rather than those of us who have the sense to and are capable of dragging ourselves off our backsides before we reach the super morbidly obese levels you need to be at for that type of show. ;)

Either way I've found that following the MFP guidelines of no less than 1200 calories a day net has since I started using it a couple of years ago meant I've dropped from close to 14 stone to at my slimmest just over 10 stone, albeit since I got lazy and stopped running/paying attention to my calorie intake I've gone back up to around 11 stone given my original habits without having learned to judge better my calorific intake I'd easily have piled it all back on in rather than just a stone.

  • Hi Stewby, I have read the whole thread and really enjoyed it! I have subscribed- hope you don't mind. I came up to your neck of the woods once for a job interview and it's a beautiful area!

About the washing tablets. I get the big boxes of powder which can last forever as you really don't need as much as they advise, even when washing uniforms. Also, my lovely husband is also a nurse. We claimed back his uniform washing expenses from the tax man a couple of months ago and got a lovely check for around £80 :j have you done that?

stewby re the wash tabs. I always use non bio, due to sensitive skin and have recently swapped to ALD! And haven't had any adverse reaction. Think they are about £2.59 for 20.
