Heating

  • We've got this amazing gadget called a thermostat which switched the heating on automatically when it gets to cold, and switches it off again when it's sufficiently warm.

Don't really understand all this talk of switching the heating on or off...surely it happens automatically?

oh I remember the days when I had central heating, of being able to press a button and be warm within a couple of minutes. Once upon a time I even had a coal fire, although sometimes it got so warm with the fire on I'd have to open the windows to cool down!

In about one months' time the temperature where I am (Inner Mongolian border)will drop to probably freezing - the mean temperature from Nov-March is minus 15...... I have no NO heating in this apartment.

So when you click on that switch to get warm, think of me :(

Are you honestly saying that your central-heating boiler is running twelve months of the year even when no heat is required?

My heating will not be going on until it drops to zero outside, and maybe not even then. It's not because I'm a Spartan masochist but because I'm totally and completely skinto.

I put ours on last night and the wife came home none too pleased as i had not closed any of the upstairs windows...Oh dear..
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

No. The thermostat switches the boiler off when no additional heat is required. This means it rarely comes on during the summer months.

Why is the outside temperature relevant? It's the temperature inside that matters.

How do you all know what the temperature is in your house?

We have a Galileo thermometer on the fireplace, and if 2 blobs are down then it's warn enough. It was a gift. I never thought of having a thermometer before, but it's pretty :)

We needed a new boiler last year and it came with a wireless thermostat. It needs to be more than 1m away from radiators, and we haven't really decided where to put it yet, so it's in the sitting room which is probably the warmest room in the house.

19.5 indoors is fine but I'm aware that I'm in the minority because everyone else is wearing coats and even gloves outside at the moment while I'm in shorts and a short sleeved top. I wore a coat one day last week when it was colder, but there's been no need for heating yet.

When it's cold though, I won't skimp on heating but I am generally the only person who's cold in this house - the 4 males don't feel the cold. Our kitchen has a metal window and is North facing so it gets cold, and the bedroom attatched to the kitchen is single story with 3 outside walls, and that gets colder, it's up to 3 degrees colder than the sitting room. Perhaps we ought to get a new kitchen window.

I've noticed this last couple of weeks that it tends to be people in larger houses who say it's cold - if they have a hallway or dining room, for example. Our tiny house is warmed through just by using the oven or tumble dryer.

Not if the boiler is shut down. Older style boilers, like ours, use a surprising amount of gas just to keep the pilot alight over the warmer months.

Temperature here is dropping rapidly so open fire was on last night and currently sitting wrapped in a blanket with a flask of tea. Rather have the cash in my pocket than the darn power company! :rotfl:

I thought it was more economic to have it thermostat controlled, whenever I've kept it off waiting to get cold the boiler is blasting up constantly, set at 19.5 it only comes on for a short while.
Is that not correct? Brittish Gas engineer advised to do it this way.
