no heating on here yet - it did go on for a couple of hours on Sunday evening, we were at Drayton Manor all day and were thoroughly soaked from the water rides, so when we came in, we got into cosy dry clothes and put the heating on to warm up.

The forecast is for temps in the 20s from tomorrow through next week here, and in any case unless we've got socks, slippers and jumpers on indoors, and we're still feeling cold, theres no need for the heating to be on.
  • OH keeps pushing for the heating to go on but I fail to sympathise with him when he is sat in t-shirt saying it's cold! For me I'll hold out as long as possible before putting the heating on as long as it doesn't really affect us or the house. I find putting fleecy socks on and a good jumper keeps me more than warm enough at the moment. Plus we have a blanket which takes the chill off. This is either in the living room in the evening or put over the bed at night if needed.

This time last year we had concrete floors and exposed floorboards, no curtains, no heating or insulation! This year we now have carpets, flooring, curtains and insulation - to me it's like heaven. I've also just bought thermal lining for our curtains and that has been fantastic!! £70 has done our whole house (including big bay windows) and they make such a difference!

Am I the only one that's liking the cooler weather? I love getting into hibernation mode (especially reading all the getting prepared for winter threads on OS, it makes me feel all cosy and fuzzy! :o

Getting the most out of my boiler before I say goodbye to it tomorrow

How do you all know what the temperature is in your house?

    An oregon. http://www.amazon.com/Oregon-Scientific-RMR203HGA-Temperature-Humidity/dp/B002JM0DEA/ref=pd_sim_sbs_hi_4/182-7943388-6977022

My wife doesn't like it in the lounge, because I can tell her that it's room temperature, so it's in the hall, where it frequently shows that it's cooler than in the lounge, and she can justify turning the heating up.

    :rotfl:

Remember that EN BS 3214 States very clearly that British Standard Room Temperature is 20 Deg C +/- 0.5 deg C

I used to work in a metrology lab and we had an air con system that kept it exactly at 20.
  • Ive put mine on for half an hour this week twice. If I need it on, it will go on, Im in Scotland and its been baltic this weekend, last weekend was really chilly.

Ive not had my boiler on since April, so if I need my heating on now and then, its fine.

I wouldnt sit and shiver if I needed to be warm and I do wrap up as well, we had a fairly decent summer up here but its getting colder and apparently snow could be on the way sooner rather than later.
  • Thanks to my neighbours mine generally goes on late November - mid December! Very lucky my house is very warm, excellent double glazing!!

We have a wee digital display that detects the temp in the room and I can adjust heating using it too.

I've switched it on for a half hour in mornings for showers as downstairs temp was 11c a few days ago. Rest of the day its extra layers, hit water bottles and blankets if anyone is cold. If they complain they know they will get active housework to do to keep them warm!

Kingspan arrives tomorrow for us to do our upstairs ( chalet bungalow with virtually no insulation at all currently) I can't wait to have it in. In fact, despite being 6 months pregnant, I plan to do a lot if it myself.

ROVER my friend was telling me this morning that she got her living room bay window done with insulating plasterboard and the installer made it a false cavity wall. She said the difference is unbelievable.

I hold off from using the heating until later in the year. That said, it's probably a lot warmer here than in other parts of the country! But when the temperature drops and winter sets in the heating goes on. I will scrimp on many things but I will not be cold.
