I am currently using voipdiscount, one of the Betamax products and need to add some credit soon. I came across Raketu. The site specifies it offers "unlimited calls" and "free" calls to 42 countries. "Free" means you have to add credit to your account.

Is anyone using this service? Any comments on the "unlimited calls"? Does it mean as many calls as you want or you can have a conversation of over an hour with someone? What is the voice quality like?
    Thanks.

No personal experience - hadn't heard of them until you raised it.

Like you I'm a content Betamax user - I think one thing to be wary of is the newness of Raketu - it took Betamax quite a while to work out a pricing model and free calls schema that was stable. For most of 2006 they tried out all sorts of pricing models/allowances/rates/specials that caused quite a lot of customer ill will as you paid up front and then found different terms/rates over times. Seems to me that Raketu are going through a similar uncertainty model, and possible overreaching themselves in trying to do a desktop client that directly competes with the big boys.

Do check through all the Betamax brands for your current needs/dialing patterns - eg I've been an InternetCalls'er but heading to JustVoip next (as dont use a SIP+ATA, just a USB blackbox).

*IF* your VoipDiscount a/c has an incoming UK # then possibly worth keeping that a/c alive for that reason (as they aren't issued anymore).

  • Thank you so much MK_Donald and Cirrius!

I like the Betamax products but the limitation of 1 hour call can be (on occasion) annoying. I found your analysis quite interesting MK. It is indeed a fairly new VOIP provider (end of last year), so may revisited it later in the year.

Cirrius, I knew some of the sites you have listed but what a mine of information you are!

    Thanks again.

Has anyone had any experience with the Linksys WRTP54G?

I have set it with the settings for a pap2 as it's nearly the same.
But the caller id settings are a bit different and that's the only thing I cant get to work .

Has anyone got the caller id to work?

    Now Sorted.- Rebooted the router

I've just signed up with www.vonage.com

Its great and very easy to install.

For £9.99 a month, I get unlimited calls to everything except 07,0845,09 and so on.

    Check it out at www.vonage.com

I have found vonage expensive and very poor quality and poor customer service.
I had a month moneyback guarantee with them paying over 80 quid including a wifi phone which worked so bad i changed it for their cheaper V-phone

I tried to quit last month and they persuaded me to stay on extending the moneyback guarantee another month.

Yesterday I decided to quit altogether and had to use a friends landline to call the 0800 number and call quality was bad there too
I had to let them babble on for ages trying to get me to stay on. I finally got it through to them i wanted to stop service.

As it is they owe me money and they charged my card a further £23
when i called they said it was disconnection fee
Who else charges a disconnection fee? I was outraged
When I asked them that they named a few US companies.
I said I am in the UK and not the US. I findf such a charge rediculous

I may or may not get back the £23
As it is they owe me over £100 and I wonder if I will get it all back without a fuss

  • Hi vinylmusic,

It looks like 12voip is one of the Betamax companies.
I recently joined voipstunt (also one of the Betamax companies)
and from my understanding I will get 120 free days.
If I only make free calls my credit will not be used up.
    There is no monthly charge.
I also paid a similiar amount to the one you have quoted, although
I do not remember paying a handling fee.
I think that the company is based in germany so you are paying german VAT.

Including VAT, I paid just over 8 pounds (Will show as 10 EURO on your voip account).

    Regards,
    Abid

    I know.
Well I haven't finished with them yet, I must see what the outcome is

If only I knew then what I know now

With Sipgate and 12voip and the great USB headset I just got from Lidl for a tenner I have all I need
    I'm very satisfied:j :j :j
