or you can use a device like a PAP2 ATA and use your regular corded or cordless DECT phones without the need of a PC being on - these connect to your router.
I use sister service to internetcalls - VoIPStunt as they issued me with an incoming number over 18 months ago (though you can point a number at no cost to any of there services, if you know where to look), with my PAP2 ATA, it's set up so you wouldn't know it wasn't a regular phone, dial plans are set up, so you can dial local numbers without having to dial 0044(local code) etc, national numbers can be dialled as 01... or 02... etc, again no dialling 00441 or 00442 etc. best of all no need for the PC to be one.
As I have cable broadband for I haven't needed a phoneline, so dumped that 18 months ago, hence my requirement to have a service usable without a PC on all the time.
Hi BexTech, I would be grateful if you can advise how you can point a number at no cost to voipstunt, as you mentioned above.
Thanks in advance

Just to have my input:
I have been using VOIP for aout 7 months now.
I am with VONAGE using my NTL oh sorry...Virgin Media 10mb broadband connection.
Complaints - nothing.
Superb, cheap and does exactly what it says in the tin of beans.0 -
Just an update for Betamax VoIP users that they've a new 'brand/service' offering under the name JUSTVOIP which seems to me to be everything VOIPBUSTER or INTERNETCALLS is, but with two bonuses: (1) Extra long list of free countries (2) UK mobile calls just 5cents+tax currently.
http://www.justvoip.com
Just click the registered already bit to see the full website without the slightly confusing marketing front end.
What I like about the various Betamax brands/services: (1) credit doesn't expire (2) UK landline 01/02 either free or just 1c+tax/minute with NO connection charge and no minimum charge - ie you can call someone for 59 seconds and pay 1c+tax! (3) if you aren't ending up paying much for calls and hence your 10 Euro+tax payment isn't going down then after 120 'freedays' you can use the credit up on paid calls before deciding whether to stick with that brand/service - eg I've been using InternetCalls daytime + BT Together 2 for eve/w'ends with 100 SMS/month (18m service, pay for 6m at £4/m) and when the euros run out I'll be JustVoip'ing unless another better one comes up. Only downside seems to be that they have SO many brands/services that one always wonders if you're on the best service with them - and allegedly the almost non-existent customer service (not that I've ever needed any).
JUSTVOIP also gives newcomers the opportunity to try for free via REGULAR phones - ie they phone your landline and then the other parties landline. (Do NOT be tempted to use this feature of calling YOUR landline all the time though until you understand you would be paying for BOTH calls - ie a call to you and call to other party to make up the total call cost.)0 -

Word of warning can't be used with an ATA as there is no SIP support.0 -

Oooo WELL SPOTTED - guess that's part of Betamax's product differentiation though as far as I recall all their previous brands/services have supported SIP and recently they've put extensive instructions on how to set it up on a vast range of ATAs -eg http://www.internetcalls.com/en/sipp.html
Friends in Italy use their VoipBuster & InternetCalls a lot with ATA/SIP devices (ZyZEL and GrandStream). I personally have a £16 Trust USB gizmo attached to my PC & DECT phone and so have never used an ATA just Yealink's VoipBusterMate software & the relevant BetaMax proprietary Windows application.0 -

I've been using the other Betamax services for quite some time now, I currently use VoIPStunt on my PAP2 SIP ATA, most their other brands can also be run on SIP.It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
I currently have a fax/telephone/answering machine on a second phone line. Am i right in thinking I can get an ATA, plug the FTAM into it, and do the whole lot using VOIP via broaband thus dumping the second phone line?0

I am no expert but yes I think you can.
Best to make sure your device is compatible first.
If it was me I would get it all setup and running for a while then if it all seems OK dump the other main line.0 -
Can anyone confirm the cost to call an Orange Livebox voip from a BT landline. The default number they give you is 0845 but you can change it to an 01/02 number
Orange CS said it would be at BT rates, but I'm not sure she understand what I was asking!!!0 -

If it's an 01 or 02 number then the cost from BT is the same as any other 01 or 02 number:-
On BT Together Option 1:
Daytime 3p/min
Evening: 5.5p for up to one hour
Weekend: 5.5p for up to one hour
If you get inclusive mins to 01 and 02 numbers such as with Primus Saver 2 then there is no charge to call these numbers during the inclusive times, just as any other 01 or 02 number.
From Call 18185 just as any other 01 or 02 number it is 5p for the entire call.
If the number begins 01 or 02 it doesn't matter if the number is VoIP, BT, Cable or any other the other providers then the rate will be whatever your provider charges for calls to those numbers (except if the number is a channel Isles number then some providers may not include them in inclusive packages).
If the number is an 0845 number, then the charges are whatever BT charges for calling any 0845 number.
