Housemate growing drugs

I'm a long term member of this forum using an alias.

I just found a marijuna plant in my garden that my newest housemate put there. I asked him by text if it is marijuna (as he's at work) but he hasn't responded. I'm just concerned he's going to plant loads as recently he wanted to clear out the attic.

I am going to talk to him, but don't know what to say. I basically want him to get rid of the plants. I'm not sure whether to report it to the police or talk to him first.

Another housemate also had her friends round the past 2 nights and one rolled a joint in front of me. I'm unsure whether my housemate does it or just her friends. I had a good house before these 2 people moved in. I am thinking of moving early to mid 2014 to move in with friends, but this is making me want to move earlier.

I'm just looking for some advice on how to deal with my housemates.

On the one hand, this is illegal. And in the unfortunate case ofa drugs raid, you could be implicated.

On the other hand, being realistic, for 1000s of (mainly but not exclusively young) people, marijuana is just part of life much like a alcohol.

Since it appears that several people in this 'house-share?' either indulge, or at least accept marijuana use, I would take the pragmatic view that you perhaps do not fit in with this particular group, and advance your plans to move on.

What kind of tenancy do you have? Are you tied in?

I certainly would not call the police as a first step. You will not exactly endear yourself to your housemates!

Talk to your housemates and perhaps even be prepared to compromise:
    * no cultivation
    * confine any use to their own room(s)

edit: ACG: you could always delete your 2nd post.....:rotfl:

I suggest that you post on the Marriage and Relationships forum http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/forumdisplay.php?f=24 - they are good at problems like this
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'

Personally, I would have instantly removed the weed that had inadvertently blown into the garden.;) I wouldn't have dreamed of telling the housemate concerned. I would have just "known" it was a weed that didn't belong in the garden and it would have vanished the second I spotted it.

If he is planning on clearing out the loft it is indeed possible that it isn't for decluttering purposes. I would have my doubts about just why he wanted to do so.

One thing is sure...for someone to go planting a cannabis plant in the garden (where anyone could spot it) means he's pretty stupid and self-destructive. You certainly don't want anyone like that for a housemate. If hes that thick, who knows what he might get up to besides that and you could land up in trouble too (despite being innocent yourself).

One way or another...get rid (whether that means him going or you going).

As for the other housemate having friends who roll joints in your home (without any consideration for you). Then, do you actually want a housemate like that either (even if they don't smoke it themselves)?

If you "were there first" then these two housemates should move out. If one or both of them "were there first" then you had better go.

Don't even try and deal with these characters...get rid...get rid....get rid...one way or another.

When I had lodgers in (okays these aren't lodgers...but still) I wouldn't have hesitated to throw any of them out that got up to shenanigans like that. Maybe that's why none of them ever dared risk it...

You can easily find an image to check what it is. If it's in the garden then pull it up and destroy it.

If you are the landlord and the tenant is your lodger then get rid of the tenant, if a tenant then warn the landlord of the possible problem so he can take action quickly.

Believe me, you do not want a C farm on the premises, I've been there last year.

If the police are called by a neighbour who notices the smell you will all be arrested until they get to the bottom of it.
    Be happy...;)
  • Call the Police. That's what we do in this country when we discover criminal acts.

    Sigh!
  • From my limited knowledge, marijuana plants need vast quantities of light and heat to grow. (Been watching too many reality cop shows!) I'm not sure how well a solitary plant would do in your average garden.

This is not intended to constitute horticultural advice.

  • I've heard of one innocent gardener being mortified at finding that pretty plant that they found growing in their garden was actually cannabis. It had got there by accident somehow (?think it might have been in bird seed?) and started growing and had got to a decent size before someone pointed out to her what it was and she got rid of it at once.
