So it's officially day 1 for me today - I did have a little slip up this morning and had a few puffs but armed with my patches now and am taking the inhalater to work.

Yesterday I actually only smoked 12 which means there's now 7 ciggies left in the house. Not quite ready to throw the few remaining ciggies though but I don't see them as a temptation just yet. Cough has already started though (guess that's what happens when you half your daily intake).

Good luck to the rest of you starting your journey :)

Well, member no.8, good luck :)

I've got two conferences to go before the end of the month, meaning that I won't be stopping until October 1st.

Just to clarify the rules here (one conference is on Monday night), is Stoptober starting at midnight, or when we wake up?

    hehe...no cheating now!

I think it's when you wake personally but the sooner the better...don't be smoking extra heavy the night before to make up for it!

I'll probably get to the hotel at 2am, and drive back at 10-11am (It's in Geneva), so that's genuinely not an 'I want to cheat', but an 'I'll be drunk, so probably won't stop smoking at midnight'

I have got gum in my car (and lots of it), so won't be smoking on the way back. My 'emergency 10' will be removed from the car in about 3 days.

  • Hi. Just ordered my kit online and hoping to do it this time. The older my kids are getting the more they notice and the more concerned I am they will follow in my footsteps. So chewing gum and inhalator bought and ready to go on the 1st x
    No buying toiletries in 2013:cool:

I will be starting in the morning, but these days I seem to be getting really early nights, so may actually start at about 10pm :)
:) Been here for a long time and don't often post
  • Hi I definitely want to give up - glad you started this thread because I know I will need support - well done and thank you - good luck to everyone.

  • Can I join too please? I've just got my ecig yesterday and love it!! I don't think I could have a normal ciggie now 😄 I'm buying a pair of boots tomorrow that are the same amount as 1 month of ciggies but they are gorgeous! plus I won't be able to afford any cigs even if I desperately want one 😉

  • I'll give it a go but I am not hopeful... entrenched habit of forty years plus !
However, I will try on 1st October as an experiment.

Hypnotherapy was a disaster. Also patches did not work for me. I felt even the lowest dose were delivering more than I needed and made me feel peculiar. And I don't even like ecigs, they make me sneeze. So it might have to be cold turkey. Eek.

Two tips that have helped me when I've run out in the past and not wanted to go out to buy any are a) chewing crystallised ginger, as it makes the mouth feel warm, the taste is strong and tends to last a while which helped me. Also b) I have sometimes managed to deal with cravings and wanting cigarettes by pretending I have just had a smoke when I haven't. eg I would say to myself 'that was a nice cigarette' until the craving wore off. It sounds daft but perhaps it fools the brain on some level. Or maybe it is just how daft my brain is!

Anyhow, good luck to all the cig free wannabes. I will try. xxx

    Hi
I hope you all do well and get to the end without having lapsed.
Speaking as a ex smoker it was one of the hardest (but the best) things I ever did. I am now both debt and mortgage free thanks in part due to giving up.
Good luck all, don't forget to reward yourselves at the end.
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)
