Had an oil filled radiator on in my living room today (heating still broken!).
It's dark, cold & wet here today. No sign of any sun. Proper Autumnal feel.0 -
chilly here today but I am holding out. 1st November I hope.0

Saw this thread yesterday...it gave me an idea, to try and find out how much it costs per hour to have the CH on.
I read the gas meter put the heating on turning the boiler thermostat up to halfway and left it on for an hour.....towards the end of the hour the boiler was hardly on as the house was warmer than when it was switched on.
Re read the meter it had clicked over 1 digit....worked out (with the last gas bill how many KWh is in a single metered unit. It came to 31.7 KWhs.
So using the formular in the bill on how to work out the cost I came up with a figure of £1.34p per clock hour at 4.334pp KWh inc vat.
So assuming I have done this correctly the hourly cost of using the CH should be 50% less that this if I set the boiler thermostat only a 1/4 the way up....but then of course more gas will be used as the boiler will fire up more often.
Please feel free to say if this seems correct OR NOT! ....particularly the price per hour, as I am no expert.
The boiler is a Worcester/Bosch Greenstar 28i.....radiator thermostats set to max and there is no room thermostat as the downstairs is open plan..no hallway.0 -

Not. Sorry!
The cost of running your heating will be directly proportional to the temperature outside of your house.
The colder it is out, the greater the heat loss of the house, the longer the boiler will need to burn at full power before modulating down. The amount it modulates down to will also correlate to the outside temperature.0 -
Absolutely not! When I see my breath inside the house I might turn it on! Its still 20C in here anyway0

My onesie has made a reappearance so it must be getting chilly, heating not on yet tho (other than a brief 10 mins the other day to test it)Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End

Ar Ha!! Fell at the first fence!!!
Didn't think of that at all Andy...thanks for that, well I suppose I can only be settled in the fact that we have done everything we can as far as insulation...usual double glazing loft insulation etc.
Although not gone for cavity insulation though....house need to breath....maybe?
So as you say there is no hard a fast rule as to trying to work out how much you spend on heating as the variable is the temperature over which you have no control.
Well it ws one way of spending a rainy Sunday afternoon!

Pretty nippy today. Played tennis this morning and it was fine without a jumper but I'm sitting here at home with all the windows shut and a jumper on, still cold. Might actually be warmer outside hmm...0

I will, however, be replacing my summer 3.0 tog polyester duvet with the heavier 15.0 tog goose down one this evening
