I can't remember who posted it on here so the credit is due elsewhere but I remember reading a nicely vague (but not untruthful) phrase with which to answer the 'why so many' question, namely: "in order to manage my finances better".

My answers were "Saving" and "Mostly" - the second question was phrased something like "You'll be bouncing £1000 between accounts?"

in my experience, when opening accounts that fall within the 'rules', the bank staff are pleased to get them open for you as it means they are opening 'new products'.

Although most staff were happy to open accounts for me, I did get one who stated that the accounts on offer were strictly for main account customers who would be paying their salary into it and paying bills from it. The rest were quite happy when I said "I'll be using it as a savings account". I had to hang up and redial to get someone else.

not a bad strategy at all....im all for getting someone 'on side' on the telephone. where possible though, i do such things face-to-face.

Did you open first account online?.

I did open the first one online and it took a few weeks before I got a letter from saying I needed to take id (passport etc) to a branch to complete my application. The account details were then sent to me a few days later. As they have already checked my id, when I applied the other day online the account was opened within 48 hours. Just waiting to see if my 3rd account will be opened.

I did provide similar answer when I tried to open N&P gold accounts wanted to take advantage of foreign currency withdrawal. When I called them they were asking me this question as they found out from my credit file that I have got more than ten accounts. I said that I wanted to take advantage of zero fee for foreign currency withdrawals but I would also use it as my main account ?. Next question, did you want to transfer your salary to this account ? My answer, "it might be in the future not now ?" Wrong answer. Guess what several days thereafter got declined. Reason. you have not met our strict criteria, which criteria they did not mention.

I applied online for my N&P Gold Current Account so didn't get questioned by any customer service staff.

  • Thanks for that link for N&P. That account must have passed us by as we are always on the lookout for an account that allows foreign withdrawals with no fee. Currently we use Santander Zero and Halifax Clarity credit cards. But it can be a right pain trying to find wifi to transfer funds onto the cards to ensure we don't get charged interest. As we tend to travel to wild and remote places wifi is not always available.

So this account seems to fit the bill. Hopefully (apart from the min £500 S.O. we will set up) it will function much the same as the old Nationwide Flexaccount (R.I.P)
  • You're welcome! I have opened a Gold Account Regular Saver and an E-Regular saver, £250 each per month so my monthly £500 is transferred manually into these regular savers.

Just noticed on the TSB website under Enhance they give you the option to open a second current account. When you click the apply button you have to log in. You are then directed to a secure site where you are only asked a couple of questions about your nationality and employment, no other details show on the page before you click the apply button.

Thanks for this info. Before when trying to open a second account kept getting message want eligible, but followed your link Sunday night and applied. and when I logged in last night the second account was showing so added enhance and applied for a third. The third account looks to have been opened today so have just end added enhance to that too.

Saves me a trip into branch/ phone call. So thanks for the help
