  • I'm odd. i prefer it if people like doctors ( i see a lot of doctors) call me mrs rates unless i am on first name terms with them.
If any professional called me babe I'd default to Lady Bracknell mode.:D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once

Do you know, I just don't mind. I encounter so many ignorant and grumpy people that I find pet names sweet. Babe, admittedly is not my favourite but I'd never ever tell someone not to call me it because then you just look like a grumpy !!!!!! yourself!
  • I don't mind terms of endearment but babe I absolutely hate. urgh. it makes me cringe. my oh calls it me sometimes to annoy me :)

'Babe' always makes me think of crappy 60's American gangster novels.

'Babe' makes me think of Gok Wan :rotfl:
It doesn't bother me if people call me it but sometimes I cringe when colleagues use it with the public (I work in the NHS) because you really don't know how that person is going to react. It's not a very professional way of speaking, in my opinion, and I would not dream of using babe, darling, love, honey etc etc in my job.

Yes, I also think saying 'babe' to a patient is inappropriate!!

In the States people call someone they don't know Sir or Ma'am, but over here that would sound too formal, so we have these regional variations on how to address people informally. Mate, bro, love, sweet'eart, darlin', etc.

In June, July and August 2010 I kept a record of the various terms used to address me in the sandwich shop near an office where I was working in Nottingham. Sadly I still have the document saved on my work laptop, in a 3 month period I was called:
    By women
    • Babe
    • Babes
    • Love
    • My Lover
    • Duck
    • Ducky
    By men
    • Duck
    • Pal
    • Mate
    • Chap
    • Ducky
    • Chief
    • Guvnor
    • Gorge
    • Mush
  • I was listening to a discussion on the radio a couple of weeks ago along the lines of being called certain names by certain people. ("Love" by builders merchant was one mentioned) and I found it interesting that so many women find it really annoying.

It doesn't bother me in the slightest if I go to a builders merchant and they call me love or darling but then I work in the construction industry so perhaps I'm just used to it!

I wouldn't expect to be called "babe" by someone I didn't know but I wouldn't bat an eyelid if any men I know well (friend's boyfriends, brother in law etc) said it to me. However, I do not like oh calling me love as it makes me feel old (I'm 26).

Babe, duck, Hun, none of them bother me.

But I don't like 'treacle'. Just as well no one has ever called me that

I have to admit I'd actually rather look like a grumpy !!!!!! than be called babe, babes or baby :rotfl:. It makes my skin crawl.
