Don't like babe unless it's said by someone who suits it. Don't think I'd object to Ray Winstone using it lol.

My BF occasionally slips up and says babe and I cringe and take the pee. Baby's okay, but only if in a sweet way. I hate a formal sounding 'baby'. I'll ring the BF on way home and do my whispy girlie voice and say something like 'hello babyyyyyyy... can't wait to get home!'. Yet if you asked me if I called him baby, my first thought is yuck, no way!

But then I'm from Essex. Most people get called babe, hun, sweetie, luvvie, etc at some stage lol. I'll often say 'luvvie' to a couple of people, but only in a flighty way, not a serious way. When I see the girl I sit opposite, I'll always say 'y'alright luvvie'. I don't like it used by older women as it can sound patronising (I'm 43, but don't see that as old ;)). Don't like 'my love' either.

I tend to refer to the 'cheekier' blokes at work as 'Trouble' quite often ('alright, Trouble?!').

Do have a bit of a melting moment when a nice East End older bloke calls me Treacle lol. The BF has the loveliest voice and said Baby/Darlin' quite a lot. Would hate it off others, but some suit it.

Hate 'hun' but am guilty of saying 'hunny' at times!

  • My oh called me Babe about 15 minutes after we met which I thought was really weird and told him off a bit. About 2 weeks later he asked me if he could call me Babe now and I relented. Nearly 4 years on he still calls me Babe sometimes and I get a bit embarrassed if there are other people around but it's his term of endearment so I can live with it. I think it's cos he's a southerner too so it sounds ok...

I do very occasionally call him Babe too, but not very often and usually only if I'm drunk

'Babe' always makes me think of crappy 60's American gangster novels.

    I've been called worse..............
I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.
  • It doesn't bother me if people call me it but sometimes I cringe when colleagues use it with the public (I work in the NHS) because you really don't know how that person is going to react. It's not a very professional way of speaking, in my opinion, and I would not dream of using babe, darling, love, honey etc etc in my job. With friends I think it's a bit different although if someone said they didn't like being called it, I'd expect a friend to respect that and not get huffy about it!

Nicknames for partners/children are different. I think most people have them, and other people shouldn't use them. My OH calls me "Baby Girl" ALL the time. It started out as a 'ghetto talk' joke but stuck. In fact the only time he uses my first name is if we're arguing or I'm in trouble about something! Likewise I call him "Georgie" (he's a George) but I'd be a bit weirded out if someone else called him it!

I don't particularly like babe (unless its from your partner).

I used to employ a man from Lancashire and he used to call me babe. I found it rather demeaning as I was his boss. When I nicely asked him not to, he was fine but explained that its a normal affectionate way to address people in Lancashire. I later noticed he did it a lot with customers.

I now have a carer who calls me Hun. I prefer hun to babe.
