Are you keeping a sleep diary? If you have evidence to wave at the GP they're more likely to take it seriously. Seems odd for them to say they won't help, I kind of thought that was their job.

hi Alex. a couple of things I have heard that tart cherry can help.Or what about melatonin tablets? Go back and ask to see a different gp and ask to be referred to a sleep clinic. If that is the route of your problems then you need to get it sorted!

    That's good advice gallygirl.

Alex, I suspect that your sleep problems and mental health issues are interlinked. When I had a full on job, I'd wake at night/couldn't get to sleep because my work issues were churning round and round in my head. I don't have that now but it's become a bad habit. I still wake but get back to sleep more easily.

I think you need to get back to that GP PDQ (or another in the practice) and ask for two pronged help. When you say they won't hep with your sleep I think you mean they won't live you sleeping pills. So what else can they suggest??? It's what they're there for but you must promise to give any suggestions a proper try.:naughty:

Alex I suffer from very poor sleep - though not as bad as you - and know how debilitating it can be.

Have you looked at your bedroom at all? One of the rules of sleep hygiene is about having an uncluttered bedroom and I'm sort of guessing your room has 'stuff' in it ;). Try giving it an overhaul - remove everything except the furniture and one or two special pieces that belong there. Put all clothes away before going to bed. Remove phones (you can always leave a phone on the landing if you worry about your parents having to ring, you're not going to sleep through it ;)). Don't have any alarms or radios that give out any light. Don't take your computer to bed with you (TV is another no-no but I know that doesn't apply). Make the bedroom a calm and restful place, not full of 'clutter'.

I know it sounds crazy but it really does help me, when my sleep gets bad again I often find it's because 'stuff' has crept back in. If I've left coat hangers on the side - is my brain remembering I need to do some ironing? Left a scarf out - I'm soooooo untidy :( I really could do with washing that, and maybe some others while I'm at it. Random item - should I ebay that or give it to a charity shop? Which charity shop? I'm in the office tomorrow, I could give it to the one next door, or walk down to the hospice shop. What's the weather forecast like though because it's a bit of a trail? Remember to wear warm coat. Hole punch (no, I don't know either!) - I REALLY need to sort out that paperwork. And make some phone calls. Because I have a lot of stuff to sort out before I move to the Middle East. AAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH I'M MOVING TO THE MIDDLE EAST!!!!!! WHAT HAVE I DONE!!!!!!! WHY HAVE I GIVEN UP MY JOB - AM I CRAZY??????????? Etc, etc :o.

Basically make your room an oasis of calm and peace. And boring so your brain gets bored and you fall asleep :D. I know you'll say you have plenty to worry about in your mind anyway, but don't give it any extra ammunition. Give it a try - at least you'll get a tidy room out of it :).

How could you possibly guess my bedroom is cluttered? ;) :rotfl: It's not too bad but probably not "tidy". Your advice is good and when told about this before, I did manage to get the place into an acceptable state but admit it is more cluttered now than it was then and could do with tidying, thank you. :)

On the subject of 'phones, computers etc. Yes, there is all manner of that type of stuff kept in the bedroom. I know it's not ideal though.

I have kept a sleep diary a while back but kept forgetting about it. Unfortunately, I seem to have a very disorganised and forgetful mind.

    What is a "tart cherry"?

The sleep issue doesn't help my other problems but I doubt it is the cause. However, I do think I should try to get into some sort of routine (think that would help but said that for years).

Thoughts churning round and round does indeed prevent me from getting to sleep. It's got to the point where I cannot face going to sleep as I know the battle that is likely to commence. This wasn't so near as bad when it was essential for me to get up at a reasonable time each day though it did occur even then.

What is "two pronged help"? They have suggested all kinds of things before, each one I've tried but often the new idea has fallen by the wayside before it has become a habit.

No idea but don't let Mrs K find out :rotfl:.

No Alex, phones and computers in the bedroom is not ideal - don't just flipping agree - do something about it!!!!! And switch off all computers etc 20 minutes before trying to go to sleep - read a book or listen to music instead.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

I'm clearly not the only one thinking the "tart cherry" sounded a little rude. :rotfl:

I don't suppose I can insert the standard "I have a house far too small" response in here...? Seriously, this post has prompted me to do something about it, though how long it'll last for I've no idea.

    Tuesday 20th January, 2015.

    Dear Diary,

Unfortunately, I seem to be less than articulate this evening but very pleased to say the cheque has left my bank account.

In other news, currently it seems I am busy with work but don't really seem to be doing an awful lot when I look back over the day's events. Not really sure where time is going but financially things are looking quite good: 'savings' (reinvestments) are up a little bit, there are no more debts to worry about and I've picked up some nice pieces to sell. Furthermore, we are managing to keep to a fairly sensible household budget that is likely not frugal by MSE standards but is working for us and most importantly means we are living within our means quite comfortably.

Outside the world of my finances the school saga is getting more intense by the day, not really any wonder I cannot sleep when such an important decision needs to be made.

    Yours faithfully,
    Alex.

Sorry, it's not a medical breakthrough I've discovered just that you need help with sleep and anxiety at the same time. You really need to try and see the treatments through though.:)

You need 'The life-changing magic of tidying' by Marie Kondo :D There's a whole thread about it on the Old-Style board, but trust me, if it's working for me, it'll work for absolutely anyone!
