mum2one: Glad to hear you're tackling your debts. I'm surviving, some days are more difficult than others but overall things business wise seem to be going well for the moment.

    Debt-free and Proud!
Friday 4th July, 2014 - American Independence Day.
Day: I haven't been counting for a long time.

    Dear Diary,

This past month or so, it may have been even longer, I have been wondering if I've truly learnt anything worth knowing from this debt free journey quest. For anybody still interested I have come to the conclusion I have: the food bills are no longer £80+ per week, things that should have been treats but became the norm for me have gone back to being treats and I savour them, I live a cash only lifestyle and do not have a need to use or take cards out with me. Not to mention, a determination to rid myself of debt has led to an increase in business activity and two new ventures that are beginning to reward me.

However, there is so much more I have learnt than how to save a few quid here and there and eat for a week with only £40 or so. I have discovered that I am not so badly off and that there is a whole other world out there, one I had denied existed before and now have learnt lots from. My biggest discovery was that money or even a lack of was not necessarily proportionate to one's wellbeing, though debt was unlikely to ever be a good thing.

My debt busting has been going slowly but I have been paying it down, though the record keeping has not been going so well (just how people manage to keep the records I've no idea) and I think I owe in the region of £8,000 now, plus a £4,750 debt to my business.

    Yours Faithfully,
    Alex.

Thanks for the positive post Alex. Learning to live within your means is an excellent skill. You just need that final big push to clear your debts. In the future when all your money problems are behind you (no income going on debts or after you've inherited) if you remember all you've learned then you won't get into a bad place ever again. You need to maintain interests other than retail therapy. Perhaps take up the ocarina!:rotfl:

maman: I intend on trying my absolute best to not find myself in a bad place with money ever again. I've long known my life is a waste of effort but do hope I can set an example to my son so he does not one day make the same mistakes.

Having a son who loves you as much as your son clearly does can NEVER allow you to be a waste of effort. Apart from that bit - great!

It sounds like you're doing great! I've written a blog post about simple living today, as I think that money can be an over-complication in lives where it doesn't need to be. It may be a slow process but it's worth it in the end :)

Thank you. :) I would not be here if I had a choice and no responsibilities.

Thank you, the money saving seems to be going well for the moment. Or it is on my part, Mrs. K.'s maybe not.

I will agree with you that the simple things can often be very enjoyable, there are some memories I will treasure forever that involved not even a penny being spent. The most recent one I can think of was my son and I going "hunting" for bats whilst my wife was away. No doubt she'll make some special memories when they go on holiday soon.

    Gosh I missed this post.

By George , I think you've got it!

I hope the business debt is the big one off from winter rather than trickling money out regularly.

And I knew it would make you happy, lol. :rotfl::rotfl: seriously, I hope you are looking after your mental health. That is the important bit.
