    UPDATE:
x4 Quantums and x1 QRAD now installed and operational. They are very easy to install and set up. I also bought the hub and am using the Dimplex app which i find to be really good and pretty simple and make the set-up of new units even easier. I can now monitor the temperatures, schedules and energy usage at my parents flat from the comfort of my own home. One of the Quantums could not have a separate night rate so i have used a single day rate supply and the advanced settings charge timer to charge the unit overnight. I have taught my dad to use the simpler functions on the app and he loves that he can "boost" anywhere in the flat from his armchair.
After Electricpoint first order errors - they made it up with a refund of the complete cost of the QRAD and fast-tracked my second order.
All-in-all a good experience and the whole package installed for £3k. I will update again after next winter on warmth & running costs.
    Cheers,
    ...so

    1. I have a NSH E7 part to my consumer board and have been advised by British Gas that whatever I have on whether NSH or kettle I get the split Night/Day rate... therefore I only need the E7 single feed on the Quantum?
    2. In a bedroom we don't have E7 so the Quantum can use the standard 240v plug in the wall? If I read you right?
Do I lose any functionality with single wire feed? I apologise if I sound thick just don't want to !!!!!! up...

  • Is anyone still reading and contributing to this thread? I'm looking for advice on the difference between Quantum storage heaters and auto fan storage heaters. I have a fan storage heater and a normal storage heater in my lounge but find it's still cool in the evenings. Does anyone know if there is a big difference between the quantum and the fan storage heater? I'm well versed with Eco 7 after having suffered it for 15+ years. My current storage heaters are 20 years old and I'm wondering if it's worth upgrading them.

I have a tag on it as I'm currently buying a place on e7 and considering swapping the 20 year old Credas for Quantums. I checked the other day and many of the main posters are no longer active on the forum.

  • I can only give input on the way Quantums, and standard older style non HHR heaters work I'm afraid. We're mainly running with just the quantum and the older Dimplex XLN running at the moment - and they're serving us very well. Temperature output on the Quantum is programmable - we're currently set to 22 degrees and that's doing ok. The XLN has input set two around 2/3rds of the way around the dial and that is throwing out heat all day - it was well after 11pm I went to bed last night and it was still feeling hot then. For context, external temperatures at home haven't got much above zero the past few days - internal temperatures have been hovering around 19 degrees in the sitting room, slightly coler elsewhere in the flat, but that's partly through choice. We popped the far smaller XLN in the bedroom on overnight Friday and Saturday nights just to double check it still worked OK but quite frankly it was far too hot in the early hours so it's gone back off again!

For clarity - the Quantums are fan-assisted combination type Storage heaters as I understand it - a fan to push the warm air out, and combination because they also have an optional convector heater which can be used on the more expensive peak rate.

We did upgrade a very old "standard" storage heater to the quantum and have been delighted with the results I have to say. The older one was basically releasing more of its heat overnight during charging and through the first half the day - and was essentially stone cold by the time we got home at night - as was a lot of the flat. The extra controllability and better heat retention on the Quantum means it costs less to run because it's far better at releasing the heat when needed, and also once it's charged overnight that's it - it just clicks off and that's it done. The old one would have been clicking on and off all night as it lost heat.

  • I have three Quantum heaters (2x QM 125 and `xQM100) in my flat which replace the original older XLS type units- the difference in "controllability" is very noticeable. Generally I get a room temperature within 1degree C of what is set. My only regret is that I bought the Quantum units when they were Generation F (Quite early ones) and they do not have the more sophisticated software as on the later types from G onwards. The actual heater is virtually identical but Dimplex refuse to supply the later circuit boards for upgrade and total replacement would be very expensive, wasteful, and labour intensive!

Does anyone know if the fan impeller needs cleaning or there is a filter to clean. Surely with it pulling air from low  level vents the fan is likely to clog up?

I thought it pulled in from the top. It's blows out at the bottom

  • I have installed 7 quantum storage heaters in my own home and run them for several years now. I've had experience of different noises from them and I've eventually solved them all so thought I'd share with you.
The most common is this one.
The fan blows hot air through the grill at the bottom. This expands the grill and in doing so, clicks as the grill rubs against the surrounding metal. The fan then stops and the grill contracts with more clicks happening.
I've tried several fixes to this. Tightening or loosening the 2 screws that hold the grill in place sometimes works but I've found the problem tends to reoccur after a short time. I've also tried fibre washers with little success. What was most successful was to remove the grill , then rub a tiny amount of polish along the top and bottom surfaces of the grill (ie the top flange where it slots into the heater, and the bottom flange that locates in the slot at the top of the 2 feet).I use a beeswax spray polish just because it's what we have in the house. I just put a small amount on my finger and thumb and rub along the length (careful with cutting fingers).
I've also had problems with a noisy fan. The blades were touching the housing slightly, making a noise. The blades are held on the shaft with an allen key, and so the position on the shaft can be adjusted, but this involves isolating both supplies and removing the fan first, although you can see if that's  the problem by spinning the blades manually in position (again- isolated both supplies first).
Also, noises from heating up at night from heating elements not sitting properly, (usually buzzing), can be solved just by moving the ends of the offending element slightly after removing right hand end panel (again isolating both supplies first).
