Just when things seem to be brighter i opened my mail to a council tax demand. Apparently the council tax has not been paid for a very long time and I have accumulated a large bill of just shy of £3 k and the ex name is not on the bill (and I have never seen a reminder which means the council have a few questions to answer and you all might have been right about the post!)
Rang the council to explain this is a bill for a period of time I did not live here and have now sent my tenancy agreement in to prove I lived elsewhere and offered to pay the bill from the time I moved back here and asked if i could have a single person's discount if the ex lives elsewhere.
Clearly the whole mess was beyond the paygrade of the lovely lady who tried to resolve it. I have now lodged a dispute saying I lived elsewhere, the ex was in the house and I would not have been paying rent if the house was empty. I also explained IMHO he actually lives here but if the council wants to say he lives elsewhere I'll take the discount.
My thought process is now he has told debt collectors and the Council he lives elsewhere so I can go for an occupation order to occupy the cottage alone. My original solicitor said this was throwing good money after bad but I've fired them and am solicitor free as it were as my experience is he was just running up my bill.
I've now rung one solicitor who wrote a blog on occupation orders then got cold feet as I did a bit of research and they are really immigration lawyers so kicked the appointment down the road - however - the head honcho phoned me this evening and asked me a few questions and I quite liked what he said. It might just be that a back street fighter is what I need to deal with his "top 500 lawyer" but a back street fighter with an understanding of domestic violence and that it is not all physical but emotional, psychological and financial might be an answer.
I also rang Womens Aid and discovered there will be lawyers at a drop in centre tomorrow so I'm off to interview those. This is not about settlement but about seeing if he can be made to leave me alone. At this point I just want a few months peace to settle into life, nurse my horse, run my business and concentrate on my health. I also half wonder if cut off from me he might try and settle himself. Goodness I am fed up this evening. Thank goodness those 2 x 4 planks are not to hand or I might end up in a cell again.

Just when you think he cannot get any lower
At least you have now found out, plus you can prove you were not living there for part of it. If he has said that he does not live there, I would ask the council to apply the single person discount from the date he said he moved out as that could reduce the bill by a bit.
On the plus side, he has said he is no longer there, you have been pushed to see other lawyers who sound more like the rottweiler type person you need for dealing with him. Even if you end up going with the streetfighter one I really hope it will be someone who will give him the push to settle and leave you alone. You have done really well to save on solicitor letters for the interim, but with something like this coming out of the woodwork its worth having someone sharp who is onside.

Who pays the rent now? You? If he doesn't live there then can you change the locks? It might be childish but it is treating hime in the way he is treating you and gives you your own safe space!

I pay everything but cannot change the locks as he will say he lives here. I'm in a catch 22 because on the one hand he says he lives here (like when speaking to the police) and on the other says he does not so does not have to pay anything. He has his own house and so uses that to prove he lives elsewhere.
In a world that is not very joined up this seems to work for him. Thus seeking legal advice. The immigration lawyer might be ok actually, they have rung me again today. Can't decide if this is nice or desperate?
Womens Aid drop in centre consisted of me and one very nice woman who was at a a loss. She did however refer me to two places. One has already called me and can't help because they need a "crisis" point to trigger their involvement and subtle ongoing is not enough. . However also referred to a charity that offers legal advice. Might take a few days but they should contact me. i can quiz them on how and what to do now and get a full understanding of where I stand and what my options are. I've researched this charity and it looks ideal, but, doesn't actually cover my area so I might need to go back to drawing board.
Slow progress but progress anyway. I get one chance at my next move so I have to get it right.Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

In other news the charming cob is doing really well Soon he will be allowed out unsupervised, at the moment I or the VNM take him for a few walks a day to graze grass. I need to call the vet to get the next recovery plan. I am over the moon and tell my charming cob that every time I see him. I feel so much joy when I see himMade it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became
