It has been an unusual weekend so far. Last weekend, Mr HOK3Y started his second job but he simply went in for training on a weekend off from his day job. He officially started his job with his first night shift last night. When he finished, he came home, got changed, and pretty much left for his day job shift. Then he came home, ate, went to bed for 3 hours and has just left for his next night shift. He has never needed a lot of sleep and he was keen to do something that makes a real difference to us as we fight down the debt as he constantly said it felt like I was doing it all and he was just watching it all happen from the sidelines.

So while I am incredibly proud of him for taking on another job to improve our financial position, I am also quite concerned for him. There is very little I can do to lessen the stress while he works out if he can handle both jobs for any period of time. I can make sure his meals are on the table when he gets home, that the house is clean and tidy, that a hot water bottle is keeping the bed warm so that he can lay down as soon as he is ready - but other than this, there is little I can do. I cannot find some extra hours in the day for him to catch up on his sleep or to decompress. And as much as my ex-military hubby recalls pulling some insane shifts out of necessity in warzones and the like, he seems to forget he was a lot younger then!

I do know one thing: I married a wonderful man and I am incredibly lucky to have him by my side.

I am acutely aware this evening that there are other things in this life that are more important than money.

V impressed by his commitment and resilience. Just think all you can both do is see how it goes and if it's too much then call it a day on the second job. Your health is more important. But if you can pull it off, even if only for a few months it will make a real difference.

    Have a good weekend x

Honestly, I can't see how this is good for your husband but ultimately it's up to you two. Good luck.

Thanks Brizzle and you are absolutely right. We will be able to use the additional pennies but they are not truly 'needed' in the sense that the roof is firmly over our head and the food will be on the table regardless. From that perspective, we are luckier than some who have to work two jobs through necessity (thank you Universe). We will see how it goes.

Alex, yes that's the point I was making but I will tell you that I know he feels, at the moment, that this is what he should do. Given that, I have no intention of emasculating him by laying down the law and telling him he cannot attempt this and must effectively continue to feel useless in this situation. Even if he decides it is too much next week, he will have made a genuine difference and I will make sure he knows how much it is appreciated.

Now, if I see him starting to break without admitting that the second job needs to go......I'll be all over it. It's a beautiful thing he is doing but I won't allow it to burn him out.

Sitting here wondering what to make for his dinner this evening.......lamb chops are currently the front runner!

    Thanks brizzle :)

Well, if I didn't know it before, I sure know that I married the best man in the world tonight.......he is sat here with me on the sofa while I check out MSE and he is looking up Elvis songs on youtube and playing them to me!!! Life is good!!! I have been lucky enough to go to Graceland and have held a lifelong love of the man even though I am still in my 30s! How many husband's would indulge it!? I am a happy bunny!

He is doing remarkably well and is adamant that he has enjoyed his weekend. I thought he had to work tonight too but he doesn't so he has a belly full of good food, has been asleep for a few hours, and has taken an evening walk out for some fresh air. Looking forward to being snuggled up asleep together in an hour or so.

And then I have to get up and go to the dentist......booooooo!!! Urgh. I hate going with a passion. Really. So to have to go with a problem that is extremely likely to result in an extraction is not exactly my ideal start to a week. Oh well. It has to be dealt with so off we go.

But it has been a good weekend with extra pennies here and there - plus a few extra pounds courtesy of my awesome hubby! Here's hoping the final few days of November are profitable for all of us!!

HOK3Y: Sorry about my abrupt previous response.

On an entirely different note, £2.00 was left in the self service tills at Sainsbury's today, I used it to pay for my bread and walked out over £1.00 up. You are teaching us well. ;)

Yeah!!!! I love that!! There is so much money out there and I hope the rebels are really starting to see that. I have had an amazing month on the roadkill front and intend for December to be even better! Keep your eyes peeled, Alex, because the pennies (and pounds!) definitely add up!

Well, I am up but I can't say I'm ready.......I hate the dentist! It will be fine, it will be fine.

Here's hoping that everyone else's week starts off better than mine!

Well, good news for me - teeth checked, cleaned, and crown recemented for the princely sum of £18!!!!! I love the NHS!!!! Having lived in several places without it, I can tell you we are pretty darn blessed to have it, warts and all. Major expense avoided....I'd have had to pay considerably more on the mainland and let's not even think about the US!!

So currently sitting in the train station awaiting the next train to work. Oh the joy. Difficult staff member is in and helpful staff member is off.....gonna be an interesting one!!! Will hit the ground running when I get there. Looking forward to an evening with Mr HOK3Y and hopefully no more police officers!! :D

  • Good Morning Hok3y...

well for the past week or so I've been working my way through yours and cottage-retreatists diaries (not up to date with CR's yet) and I must say I am inspired by your positivity the whole way through! I am a great believer in the law of attraction and have studied it in depth for a few years now and can see it is definitely working for you, especially in the roadkill department :-)

Also I have been able to empathise with you about your son living away with his dad. I allowed my son to go live with his dad in Florida when he was 13, he had his 21st birthday last week, and tbh I've never been the same since, I have always felt there was part of me missing. Lucky for me, I still had my daughter with me, but just wanted to tell you I know how you must feel.

I've loved your roadkill rebels thread too! Actually its makes me laugh out loud...a lot!!!! I'm practising right now, ready to join the december thread. On my first shopping trip I completely forgot to look, the 2nd trip I kinda looked and on the 3rd I remembered to look but up to now I've found nothing...but I am hopeful my brain will start filtering in all shiny objects on the floor very soon! We have a vending machine at work that always has credit in it, I can't wait to check it next time I'm in lol, its a pity I'm off for 2 weeks annual leave right now...hmm ok no its not a pity at all, I can wait.

Good luck to you Hok3y, I know you will definitely succeed :-)
