I'd need to get a long way from here to get to a better part of town and green space is limited, being in the inner city.

But both my kids live in a good area so when I'm there I make sure the dogs get a good walk. There are some woods near my daughter and I thought, hopefully there won't be any druggie dogs here, and indeed, there weren't...but there was a very large fox that came eyeball to eyeball with Jack! Fortunately it decided not to go for him so no harm done.

    Wow, that's one brave fox.

Still I think I'd rather go to the woods than face the druggie dogs.

    Hope Jack is comfortable today.

Wasn't that brave. It eyed Jack up and turned tail back into the bushes!:)

Jack's ok. he's just gone for a short lead walk with his armed-with-a-walking-stick dad:)

Somebody I know ALWAYS carries a stick with him when dog walking. He has a complete Border Collie and although his dog doesn't start fights, other un-neutereds do, and when this happens my friend wades in with his stick! He's been called a few names though.

That's what I'm going to be doing in future.

Any other dog starts on my dogs it's going to get clobbered with a walking stick. The cops can't call that an offensive weapon...surely.

My neighbour was stopped by them a while back for carrying a stick from a tree to the park with him to defend his dog if necessary. They made him throw it away under threat of arrest if he refused.

Yep, walking stick is fine, and if you had to use it you could always say you thought the other dogs were going to attack you and you were just defending yourself. My friend who has working Labs has got a proper dog handlers stick. Forgive my ignorance, I don't know what they're called. It's quite tall, like a shepherds crook. She uses it to "tap" the dogs if they move out of formation (and I do mean tap, not hit) lightly on the bum or side, just as a reinforcement to her verbal commands or whistle. There's certainly not a law against carrying one of those as far as I'm aware, they're a legitimate bit of dog handling kit. And no copper is going to stop somebody from carrying a walking stick and risk Disability Discrimination! Go for it!

Thanks joansgirl. I'll google that, see if I can find out what it's called.

The way some idiots round here just throw out of control dogs into the street to walk themselves is beyond a joke.

Before today I have had to "shove" attacking dogs away with my scooter which will at least get them away from my dogs for a minute, long enough to break up the initial attack. It's a waste of time informing the police because they just refer me to the dog warden, and by the time they show up the dog is long gone.

you are reporting the attack wrongly zaksmum! if you are screaming down your mobile 'Oh my god, help!!!!!!! this dog is going for me - its going to bite me!' I am pretty sure you wont be referred to the dog warden! and you wont be lying either - it may very well bite you!

Hmm...never thought of it like that meritaten.

I was far from calm as my nerves were shredded but did only report a dog on dog attack which naturally enough the cops couldn't care less about.

Another excellent piece of advice from you:) thanks again.

Joansgirl, I can't find anything about those sticks on Google.

If you find out from your friend what they are called can you let me know please? Thanks
