Jack saying goodbye to his bits

My dog Jack is booked in to be neutered on Monday.:(

I'm not a bit happy about it as I have never seen the need for it.

However, he's becoming far too dog aggressive. If another entire male gets in his face there's a fight and I can't bury my head in the sand any more.

On the one hand, I'm happy that he will defend my elderly female dog Lucy, who's nearly 11, from other dogs.

On the other hand I can do without being reduced to a nervous wreck every time another entire male comes anywhere near her...or, God forbid, near him! He just freaks out and goes on the attack.

So the bits are going and I just hope I've made the right decision:(

Hope it works for you. It's not an automatic fix necessarily....don't believe people who tell you it is, but it may work. Fingers crossed.

As CFC said, it's not an automatic fix, but it won't do him any harm. At least you'll know you're doing everything you can to curb his dog aggression. I'm a great believer in neutering all dogs that are not going to be bred from, males and females, it's much better for their health. How old is he? What make is he?

I hope it works too. God only knows what I'll do if it doesn't.

He's 5 and a first cross between a black labrador mother and blue whippet father.

He was fine till he got attacked a few months back by a staffie. He fought it off but it's as if he suddenly realised he doesn't have to worry because he can fight other dogs off.

If an entire male dog so much as looks at him the wrong was he kicks off and he's got my nerves shredded.
  • Aw sounds like my sisters dog he was attacked by a staffie now hates other dogs she had him neutered but he still doesnt like other dogs hes frightened of them so trys to get in first.
Awful to think a bad experience can have that affect on them :(

Once they are neutered, other male dogs see them as a free hump, this often makes things much worse.

I have a 9 month old Springer and we have been talking about it with our Vet. He is not aggressive, just very bouncy. I know that it is a big decision so I am still not sure.

All my families other dogs are neutered. It is the responsible thing to do i know. We have said that if he starts showing aggression we will have to do it.

I really hope that this works out for you and him. Poor thing he sounded as though the attack really affected him. Have you spoken to your vet?

To be honest the neutered line is been pushed by puppy farm breeders, it means they take out the home litter casual breeders and anyone wanting a puppy has to go to them and pay the inflated prices.
Prices of puppies of pedigree dogs have trebled over the last few years.

Does it calm them down, IMO only if it leaves your dog with depression, if anything it increases the attention they get from other male dogs who think they can now mate with the neutered male and more fights ensue .
    Be happy...;)

I have 2 male dogs, both of which were neutered at around 18 months. They are both full pedigrees and have never been aggressive towards anything (apart from my Dyson which my German Shep hates with a vengeance!) I had them neutered as they are pets, not puppy producing machines. They will never get testicular cancer now, so that's one danger off the list, and both are loving happy dogs.

No other dog has ever tried to hump either of them, particularly the Shepherd who is a big boy, and when we walk with my friend's 2 dogs, he is the one in charge, despite her male dog being entire. There have been one or two grumbles from him as he is younger, but he has totally accepted that my dog is 'top dog'.

Her dog, however, who is not neutered scared the living daylights out of her the other week by opening and leaping out of a first floor window to get at a b!tch on heat.... luckily he had a soft landing and wasn't hurt, but it could have been so much worse...

Do be aware, OP, though, that it takes a few months for the testosterone in a dog's system to go completely, so the effects of neutering aren't felt for quite a while.

Ohhhh! Poor Jack. The vet did say it should curb his dog aggression but he's such a lovely dog in every other way that I'd hate it to change his personality or as Spacey says, leaves him depressed.

I wish I didn't have to do this.
