I had CPP as a student 1996-2000 with an old HSBC credit card. I spoke to them today and they said they have no record of it and suggested that I contact CPP directly. The advice on here seems to be pre 2005 it's the bank who need to pay you back. I downloaded the template letter but I do not have the credit card details on which I need to make the claim.

Any advice on what my next step would best be?

    Thanks

If the bank have no records and you have no records then you are pretty much stuffed going back eighteen years.

If you disbelieve that they have deleted your account details, send them a Subject access Request (SAR) letter which will require them to send you anything they have kept on file for you. This will cost you £10, so could be expensive if it returns no useful information.

Remember that, even if you do find proof that you held the insurance, you'll still have to present a robust mis-selling complaint in order to be successful.

He can't. If it's not post 2005, he won't be reimbursed through the CPP scheme.
If it's before, he can try complaining to MBNA, but there's little chance there either.

would you think it worth sending a letter to MBNA?

For the price of a stamp, there's no harm.
You need to show that the CPP was superfluous really, that the terms and conditions of the card/s already covered you for the things that CPP did, and so it was a rubbish product.

Don't get your hopes up though.
