    Debt-free and Proud!
Hello stressedoutmum. I don't normally post here but I'm putting together hampers myself this year and someone told me last week- charity shops. You can get an assortment of different wicker baskets in charity shops. Cheap as chips too. I picked up 3 yesterday- 75p each. Once you have this as a base you can decorate as you like with ribbons and fabric on the base etc etc.

    Hope that helps.

Hi, new to this this year!!

What is everyone using as their actual hamper? I've been on the look out for wicker hampers, but can't seem to find any?

    Thanks
I just think it's a bit early at the minute. Shops haven't got all their xmas stock out yet. Last year I got some lidded ones in B&M.

I managed to get some wicker baskets off Freecycle a couple of weeks ago - someone was asking for some this weekend.

Also from Freecycle, a set of drawers to sit on a desk - for my older son's hamper, which I've finally decided will be made up of sticker books, activity books, new felt tip pens, stickers, etc.

My younger son's hamper is going to be a gym bag filled with gym stuff.

My daughter is saving for her first home and will be moving out some time next year. Her kitchen hamper is a hessian shopping bag with flamingos on (she loves flamingos :)).

I'm not sure what my mum's hamper is going to be made of yet. I don't think she would reuse a basket. It's a general hamper made up of items that are practical (like Steredent), and luxurious stuff that she wouldn't buy herself (decent chutney, posh marmalade, etc).

My daughter is making her nan and grandad (my in laws) a tea and coffee hamper, with everything on a teatray.

For her birthday, I made my niece a hot chocolate hamper at her request - she loved the one I had made for her mum last Christmas. I used an ornamental suitcase from Dunelm Mill, which cost £2.99 in the sale.

You can use many different things as a hamper, but one thing to remember is that buying a new hamper basket can add at least a fiver to the cost of the gift, and considerably more if it is large. Open baskets are cheaper, and Home Bargains have a rather nice, flattish rectangle basket for £1.99. Hat boxes from Dunelm Mill start from around £3.99. An old biscuit tin from a charity shop could make a hamper with nostalgic items in, and cost very little. A lasagne dish would make a nice hamper for herbs and spices, and you could add a small book of recipes, or laminate some recipes from the internet.

It all depends on what your hamper theme is, what size you need, what your budget is, and whether you are happy with used items or insist on brand new.
  • Hiya,
Is anyone doing a hamper for a whole family? I want to attempt to make hampers for everyone on my list this Christmas but I'm stumped as to what to put in.
Last year, i did do a breakfast items hamper for my sister's family and they loved it. I wouldn't want to repeat this year.
The only thing I've been able to come up with is "everyone and their drink" and a plaything for each child (maybe a book or two in there). Any ideas would be welcome.....

FOr a random one! Buckets are 75p in Asda at the moment! Have done retro sweetie ones in their Smart price mixing bowls as well. I second Charity shops if you are looking for wicker baskets and HB have some as well but in my opinion too expensive for a container- Would rather have something I would reuse- Kids bins from Poundland also work well!

  • Hello redbooties,
    How about this ......
for the lads in the family.... a night in items
2 or more cans of beer
cans of Cola (for the 17yr old)
    Doritos and Sensations
    Salsa dip
    Microwave popcorn
    Poker set
(I believe I saw a hamper like this (from the Christmas's past thread) on the forum)

For the ladies of the family.....pampering items of make up, bits and bobs from the cosmetic counters.

To tie in, for everybody.....biscuits, sweets, chocolates and one or two specific items you know particular people like.

Hope it helps you get started. :)

I have bought plastic storage boxes to make my hampers with they can be decorated in many different ways and can be reused for storage after Christmas.
  • I do one for my Godmother, I get the baskets in IKEA and put her luxury goodies in since she does not get out much these days! She loves them since she has a lot of visitors over, so nice biscuits, cakes etc. give them a real treat!
