Do I have rights to a satellite dish?

It's got a bit daily mail in this thread.

It certainly has. I don't think having access to your preferred satellite tv service is a human rights issue (and think it's a bit disgusting for people to try to claim it is) but equally I don't think 'go back to where you come from' is an appropriate response to the OP.
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

To noones surprise it is a human right to have a satellite dish after a case in the ECHR.

However that decision was based on the fact that the "landlord" refusesd to supply any access to satellite tv.

In this case it is not regarded as contrary to your human rights as there are some channels which wil cater for your choice if not as many as you would like.

The constructive way to deal with this was to have the council agree to allow installation of a dish directed to pick up the low angle sats and tied into the communal system at your cost.

They may refuse, which they are entitled to do, intitially but make use of the formal complaints system and they might bow to pressure, but you have no right.

Can I suggest that while some exposure to the culture of your orgin is important, it is even more important important to integrate and expose you and your children to the culture which you now live in. Thats part of the reason to move, isnt it?.

Agreed. This is an issue my res management co looked at when reviewing enforcement of covenants. Legal advice was that the issue was a religious rather than cultural one.

I'm sat here wondering exactly what the OP has done to deserve all this vitriol from posters?

So it's not a human rights issue - fair enough. Time for the comments to move on?

When I worked in New York for 3 months, I occasionally enjoyed catching up with Eastenders on one of the satellite stations I had available at the time (that was part of my 'culture' too). Fortunately, nobody in New York told me to 'get out of their country' as a result. Maybe I was just lucky...

But I assume you did the sensible thing and caught up on iPlayer rather than asking for a 'how to' on circumventing the regulations of your apartment block that you explicitly agreed to when you moved in.....

The iPlayer doesn't work abroad AFAIK. Which presumably is why the poster relied on satellite tv.

I think it was the "Human Rights" argument to watch an extra selection of tv channels that has put the backs of so many of us up by the look of it. I would suspect the "making a mountain out of a molehill" rather than adapting to the culture they have now come to live in is the other part of it.

A good point was made earlier that perhaps the Council could make some sort of adaptation to the communal roof satellite dish.....but they would be fully entitled to charge every last penny of the cost of doing so to OP (including staff time). It would not be fair to Council Taxpayers to have our money and our staffs time spent on a minority demand, when there are so many necessities that our Council Tax has to pay for and our Council workers are doubtless hard-pushed as it is to fit all their tasks into their workday. Necessities for all of us come first and IF there is any time to spare then maybe luxuries for a minority can be dealt with (provided said minority recognises that the cost - to THEM personally - will probably amount to some thousands of £s by the time Council staff time is taken into account).

Personally my priority for Council money and staff time would centre round things like making sure some ill frail old person has the "care" they need to stay living comfortably in their own home.

I'm not a racist person...but think more and more of UK are getting fed up by being treated like 2nd class citzens because all foreigners have to do is say 'its my human rights' or 'thats racist' and they get their way.

I despair of the intolerance of so many people in this country. You are being treated like a second class citizen because you are not rich, not a banker, not a politician, and maybe even because you are a member of the "undeserving poor". You have been conned by the right wing press and this awful Government to blame "foreigners" so that you do not blame the people who are really responsible.
  • Ahem....I haven't spotted any racist posts by this poster. Lets get our facts straight here.

Moneyistooshorttomention - you're not exactly known for getting facts straight and being particularly open minded towards minority groups yourself.....
