I have just posted my first item over the counter. I am being asked for the " Last Acceptance Time" of the post office. What does this mean. Is it the time on the postbox outside for final collection?

There is actually an "official"/"technical" answer to this question.

For Monday to Friday it's BEFORE 17:15

My local Post Office closes at 18:00 and I've frequently dropped last minute mail (my own) in at 17:50 to 17:55 and it has DEFINITELY gone that night - I know this because it has been 100% delivered the following day.

When asked about Last Acceptance Time I responded with 17:50
(the postbox outside has a 17:30 last collection)

It was only in conversation with the Post Mistress the other day that it turned out this time IS NOT GUARANTEED!

Royal Mail rules are such that a Collection Driver DOES NOT HAVE TO COLLECT any mail from a Post Office AFTER 17:15 on a weekday

IF they are running late or for some other reason can't be bothered to retrieve the over the counter mail that's arrived after 17:15, then they are under NO COMPULSION OR INSTRUCTION to do so.

Whilst the vast majority of the time this mail IS collected, because the drivers are friendly and helpful (Post Mistress's words) it is not always the case.
Just because it happened last week and this week doesn't mean it will be the same next week.

Basically with box/PO collections you can collect as late as you like,as long as the mail connects to the pipeline. Never early though.
The PO has to present the mail to the driver,so its more a case of do they have time, does the driver have time to wait.

This is the reply I've had from the helpline in response to my query about paper folding in jiffy bags:

It is sufficient enough to have the SMART by the side of the cardboard insert inside the once folded paper.

Hopefully this puts an end to the 'jiffy bag debate'!

I'm not sure this actually answers JazzyJ's question.

I'm not sure if what I'm doing is correct, but when it's one of the indicia as above, I put it as not having a postmark. If you say it does have a postmark it will then ask you for the date and time of sending, which obviously is not something that is included with this type of postage mark.

Yes, that is what I did, and I thought if they had any queries, they could check back with me!

Have been invited to do the Unaddressed Survey too. In for a penny, in for a pound!

After this debate, I put my folded paper inside the cardboard sleeve today! It certainly does bulk it out more and now likely does require £3.30 in postage rather than when not stuffed inside the cardboard, there is too much postage on the jiffy bag.
  • i have to walk past the address my letter is addressed to in order to reach the post box. I know its not the point of the research but really tempted to pop it through the letterbox.

    Well what would that achieve?

I had to do this during my previous stint on the survey
