So in all not really gained any more information from the phonecall other than its a 36 page report and they have all the information they require, so the wait continues.

2nd person checks the report is correct and that all the info is there. They are really checking the quality of the report writing rather than anything to do with the descriptors. (Evidently the early reports were poor quality, which is where they reckoned all the back log came from)
When it goes back to DWP they check it against descriptors and make the decision.

Its been 4/5 months now and still no appointment. I've read a lot of comments saying that ringing ATOS/CAPITA can speed things up, how do i know which assessor I'm going to be with and what do i need to ring them up? (i.e. national insurance number etc).

    Cheers

Phone the Dept of Work and pensions and ask if/when it was sent to whoever is doing the assessment. If it hasn't been sent ask why?
Then ask for the phone number of the assessor. Look them up online to see where the assessment centres are. See if you can get to any other than your nearest. Then phone them and ask for a cancellation at any of these centres

Just rang ATOS who said that they've received my form and that they're "still gathering evidence" to see whether or not i need a FTF interview. Whats taking them so long! Its ridiculous.

It certainly is. You could ask what more evidence they need- see if you can supply it quicker.
